    Proposal: Better Image Desired Category

Now that Opus is approaching the remarkable achievement of almost 7000 species with photographs, I think it is time to add a new category called "Better Image" or "Better Image Desired". We moderators should go through the Opus pages and add the category to all species where the photo is...

    Greg Lavaty Photos

Greg Lavaty is a photographer from Texas. He is a Bird Forum member. He has given me permission to upload photos from his website for use in Opus. The website is a "gold mine" that I've barely begun to work my way through. I have uploaded 7 new species so far: Altamira Yellowthroat...

    Birdfinders photos

Do any of the moderators know the folks at http://www.birdfinders.co.uk/news/colorado2004pics.htm because they have a photo of Gray Vireo (one of the missing images) on their web site? Perhaps they'd be willing to contribute it to Opus. They might have other photos we need for Opus as well...

    another new Yucatan bird

I added a rather dark photo of a White-bellied Emerald to Opus. But, the photo shows the short bill (whose length really contrasts with the abundant Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the area in the winter) and the white breast and belly. Peter

    Question ID of Yucatan Woodpecker

The photo in Opus associated with Yucatan Woodpecker looks to me like a female Golden-fronted for the following reasons: 1. The bill is too long and too robust. 2. The bird is lacking the golden tufts around the base of the bill that should be present in both males and females. I have...

Lots of new photos in Opus

In the past few days, I have added photos for the following species from my recent Manu Expeditions tour to Southeast Peru (some images are entirely new, some show a different sex or an immature, some show different races, and some show different plumage characters or behaviour--e.g., perched...

    Another new bird for database

I uploaded Apurimac Brush Finch to Opus and linked it in to the entry. I uploaded the same picture (again--did I need to do that?) to the Gallery. How do I get this picture added as a photo to the database? Peter

    New birds for database

I uploaded and linked into Opus three new species: Parodi's Hemispingus White-browed Tit-Spinetail Blue-headed Macaw I couldn't figure out how to also link these photos to the database. Could some one do this or point me at instructions for doing so? The photos have photographer, location...

Three Hispaniolan birds for the database

Two of these species (Ridgway's Hawk and Hispaniolan Trogon) are not in Opus or the database. The Antillean Mango in the database is a female (or immature), while my photo shows an adult male. These birds (and others) were seen on a January 2007 private tour with Kate Wallace of Tody Tours...

    Searching the Database (Opus)

Searching the database (Opus) seems to be case-sensitive. That is, if I search for "Bay-chested Warbling-Finch" I get to the photo in the database, but if I search for "Bay-chested Warbling-finch" I DO NOT GET to the photo in the database. Is this what was intended? If so, I'm quite...

    White egrets in Ireland?

I just got back from a (non-birding) tour of Ireland. But, of course, as a birder, I had my binoculars and my Birds of Europe field guide (Jonsson). While waiting to board our tour bus at about 0745 on 25 August 2005 at the Bunratty Hotel near the mouth of the River Shannon (about 6kms from...

    Hybrid Tanager: Blue-gray x Palm?

Not sure about genetic ancestry of the bird on the left. Obviously contains Blue-Gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus) genes, but black wings are mysterious. I'm guessing they come from Palm Tanager (T. palmarum). Does anyone know about hybrids of these species? Peter Bono

How can I volunteer to edit the database?

I expect to be uploading a lot of images to this forum. I know that volunteers move the images from the message attachments to the database. I'd like to volunteer to help with this process, especially as I will be one of the people creating a lot of work in the future. Also, I'd like to be...

    Brazilian Photos for Database

These are frame grabs of birds from Southeastern Brazil. While they are not particularly sharp images, they are species that are mostly hard to photograph and not represented in the database. I'll continue to put the best images into the Gallery so more people will view them. Peter
