Another great day in the Pyrenees 2024

Time to kick off again - only because things are kicking off Eagle owl, lammergeiers with chick both almost in view of my house and scops kicking about… A couple of booted eagles and a couple of goldies today and a very sorry short toed eagle in the rain the other day. Wallcreeper on the...

Another Great Day in the Pyrenees - 2023

Something inspired me to kickstart this years thread - what could it have been? OK short trip to Gavarnie and because of the rubbish weather didn't get out of the car! Highlights Rock Thrush pair, Red Backed shrike wishing he was in Africa, 2 Snowfinch - didn't get a photo because it was...

    Corn Bunting in Europe

Bit of a straw poll really. I'm getting lots of chatter in the South West of France, more precisely in the centre west of the Pyrenees, about an influx of Corn Buntings in the area. The suggestion has been made about those displaced from Spain because of dryer warmer summers. This could also...

    Harrier SW France 28/09

Ok so I had this as female Hen Which primary is moulting? P9? Are there enough? What am I missing? The dark edge of the secondaries seems to disappear when it reaches the primaries - wouldn't female Hen have a consistent black line - trailing edge? I hate Harriers, well actually I don't I...

Two raptors on migration French Pyrenees - 15/09

Had two raptors today above Gavarnie on migration - I thought the first was a Honey (had just had a honey and thought this was Booted - which it isn't) and the second I thought Marsh Harrier... Pictures fairly distant, although heavily cropped, and don't show much apart from structure.

    Pipit (RT) Pyrenees 28/08

In our Lesser Kestrel Field two Pipits took off - the call was as much a Red Throated as I could imagine - not that familiar with but defo not a meadow pipit call!!!! In the same area were Ortolans, Yellow Wag, Whinchat... The two birds flew up where one landed and the other floated around -...

Two (Lesser) Kestrels Pyrenees - last night and today

Two photos that I now think are Lesser Kestrels - they are everywhere at the moment - 17 Bagneres, 5 Ger and apparently 18 where these pictures were taken tonight! One I'm mainly focussing on the nail being white and the other no moustache. There must be some structural hints as well...

Duped by a Woody - Pyrenees France?

Another Great Day in the Pyrenees 2022

Birding opportunities have been scarce My mind has been occupied. I want to say that I am deeply saddened by the events in Ukraine. I fail to see what this madman has to gain but already the human cost has been too much. Stop it you idiot! To clear my head I went to the woods. First surprise...

Looks like I posted in the wrong forum... any thoughts on this question ? A friend was asking me what I thought about digiscoping and advice, asking me (?), good luck. Anyway he has a Bushnell ED 80 scope and wants to marry it to a Olympus TG6 or a Powershot S120. I know nothing of the...

    Digiscoping - still a thing - Powershot S120 or Olympus TG6

A friend was asking me what I thought about digiscoping and advice, asking me (?), good luck. Anyway he has a Bushnell ED 80 scope and wants to marry it to a Olympus TG6 or a Powershot S120. Another Great Day in the Pyrenees 2021

Can't believe its 2021 already, time flies when you're twiddling your thumbs! Anyway, not much in the way of birding. So I saw two Kestrels sat together. When I stopped I only had a view through the corner of the windscreen. However, the male didn't have a moustache and the female was very orange brown in the colour. immediately I thought Lesser Kestrel and tried to grab a photo as they flew in opposite...
