    New RSPB Avocet binocular range

You're correct, no phase coating but still a very good view, bit of CA but not distracting. I used them while going round the reserve and really like the Avocets. Pretty lightweight too.

    New RSPB Avocet binocular range

I popped into RSPB's Conwy reserve today as I'm on holiday in the area. Looked at the binocular range as I was looking for anew pair after having to sell my last set due to car trouble! Had a look through a pair of Avocet 8x32s which I was told they only had in yesterday and was a new range. Not...

What model are these Carl Zeiss "Made in West Germany" Binos

If you paid £100 for them I think you got a bargain, even with the damaged eyepiece lens coatings, I'd have snapped their hand off (assuming my wife wasn't about to tell me off for buying another pair of binoculars!) Might be worth asking Zeiss for a price for replacement lenses, might even...

What model are these Carl Zeiss "Made in West Germany" Binos

Later coatings would probably help with any fringing, my 8x30s seem very good when it comes to lack of CA though. Mine will probably get quite a bit of use, though only in dry weather as I don't think they're waterproof - I believe they are 'weatherproof' though I suspect after 50 years' use...

What model are these Carl Zeiss "Made in West Germany" Binos

To give you an idea of price my Dialyts, which are the same apart from being 8x30s and are in a similar condition to yours though the eyecup rubber is perished (though it has both name plates on them still) cost me £62 off Ebay. Yours may be slightly more as I believe the 10x40 model is a bit...

What model are these Carl Zeiss "Made in West Germany" Binos

Yes, I'd say too they're the 10x40 Dialyts, I've got the same but 8x30 version (long tube version) with what I think is a very early serial number (654132 from memory). Despite their age (they must date from the mid-60s, yours I would guess at late 60s or very early 70s?) they stack up very...

    O2 Network Down?

Ok here in Staffs, posting this from my O2 mobile, maybe just a brief or local outage? Though taken a few attempts to post this reply...

    Mallard Hybrid? - Lichfield, UK

I'll keep an eye out for them too next time I'm at Stowe Pool and let you know if I see them. I'll be the slightly overweight 34 year old probably with a pair of binoculars slung round my neck and smoking a roll-up fag! :)

    Mallard Hybrid? - Lichfield, UK

I was birdwatching at Stowe a few days ago, I missed those ducks! Nice spot :-)

    Lichfield

I'm in Lichfield but sadly can't tell you much - I'm very much a casual birder and a bit of an optics geek! I do enjoy watching bird behaviour and antics but no good at ID'ing!

    Substitute for telescope

Seconded with the canons. I've a pair of 12x36s and love them, fov I find is fine on those and rock steady to hold with IS engaged. Quite steady without too! Just make sure you take a couple of sets of AA batteries with you for spares.

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

I found wonder if it's my eyes sometimes. The error is relatively small so it might well be something I can live with, the view still feels very relaxed. I am due an eye test, might mention it!

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

After searching for something unrelated I stumbled across a post about someone having trouble with the collimation on their twin-hinged compacts if they had one tube extended and left the other one tucked in when adjusting the IPD. I tried this on my Trinovids, then pulled them both out about...

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

Eek! That's it, they're going straight in the bin now! Either that or see if I can get a mini-plunger so I can shove my eyes back into place ;)

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

Slightly off topic but would using these binoculars with slight miscollimation damage my eyesight in any way?

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

Thankyou for your input everyone, I think I might leave it for now - the miscollimation is only just perceptible really though definitely present. They've emailed me with a phone number of a contact so might give them a ring to see if I can clarify the warranty situation. I think I might get...

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

They are ideal for my use, can go anywhere with me and the quality of the optics is more than good for me! :) I've emailed Leica, they said they'd have to send the Trinovids off to Germany - though said they don't cover and damage from water or impact. I can't find any evidence of impact damage...

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

I've had a look and both barrels and they're still in line, guessing they've had a knock at some stage that's taken the collimation slightly out - or had one in the post! Still very pleased with them though.

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

Thanks Brocknroller, I'll drop their service department an email and see what they say :) I suspect I'm particularly sensitive to slight alignment issues too, I bet if I gave the bins to someone else to try they wouldn't find a problem at all! Sadly I didn't get them off Dennis, they were off...

Is it possible/advisable for me to adjust the collimation

After a phase of buying what I thought were 'value for money' but dissapointing bins, I've got a lovely pair of 8x20 BCA Trinovids today, secondhand. The view is wonderful - but I feel that the collimation is out ever so slightly. There's no double vision as such or eye strain but when I finish...

Ease of setting Dioptre - better as you spend more?

I've just received a secondhand pair of Leica 8x20BCA Trinovids, managed to get the dioptre sorted almost within seconds on it! I suspect the bins I've had problems with have had a slight issue themselves, or were simply cheap/junk optics. My Hawke Endurance 10x32s are fairly good though I...

    Some 12x36IS II questions

both the 10s and the 12s I have you need to keep your finger in the IS button for it to continue working, it's not one you press once and it stays on for 5 minutes. Looking at the 12x36s I've got they've certainly had a fair old whack or two and continue working (apart from the left optical...

    Some 12x36IS II questions

Thanks for that very informative post Binastro! I have in fact bought a pair of 10x30IS off a fellow member here on BF - amazingly the IS on my wrecked 12x36s works better it seems than the 10s unless I'm doing something wrong! Don't get me wrong, the IS on the 10s is excellent but the 12s seem...

Ease of setting Dioptre - better as you spend more?

Yes, I wear glasses, they have frames but often find bins with the eyecups rolled or twisted down give me blackouts, often have to have them twisted down halfway. Could the IPD setting cause more problems with my dioptre settings? Perhaps it's just me then, maybe I'm especially sensitive to...

Ease of setting Dioptre - better as you spend more?

Not sure if I'm just very sensitive to poor dioptre settings but I often find that getting a pair of binoculars just right for me is very hard. There are some that take me what feels like hours of twiddling, fine tuning and trying at various distances to get it right, others I never seem to, and...
