    Raptor in Central Scotland

This was taken on 1 April. Our first impression was that it was a really big buzzard but when we saw the photo we didn’t know what to make of it. Any suggestions?

These were growing on a roadside verge under conifers. Again grateful for any suggestions.

    Fungus ID requested - Scotland

These were growing on the stump of a cut down Willow tree; sorry to be so light on information. I’d be grateful for any suggestions.

What is this duck or goose in Central Scotland?

I saw this bird today, much longer and larger than the Mallards it was amongst.

    Beaver Lodge, Scotland?

Is this a beaver lodge? Thanks.

    Plover Firth of Forth, Scotland

I saw a Plover today at Culross. It seemed bigger than a Ringed Plover, had a white brow and a thin white supercilium. Its sides were light grey to silver, with reflected sunlight creating the appearance of a white bar. What is it?

    Goshawk in Scotland?

I saw this bird near Doune yesterday. It looks to me like a Goshawk. It looked bigger than a Buzzard and had a flat crown with white supercilium bordered by black and a yellow base to the bill. I was very distant looking through binoculars. What do you think? Michael

    Gulls at Culross, Scotland

I saw at least four gulls on the Forth at Culross today that looked like Black-headed Gulls except that they each had a clear black or very dark patch on the breast arching up from the waterline. Other Black-headed nearby had no black on their fronts. A couple of the black-breasted had wing tips...

    Insect in M&S Dunblane

I found this crawling up my jacket in the cafe in M&S in Dunblane. I suspect it might be an immature form of whatever it is, but I have no idea how to identify it. Michael

    Objective Cover for ED78?

I'm looking for an objective lens cap/cover for my Nikon ED78 Fieldscope. Nikon don't seem to produce them any more. Is there a standard camera lens cover that would do, or does anyone have another suggestion? Thanks. Michael

    New Traveller

Opticron have a new version of the Traveller out. They've changed the colouring slightly, though it still looks a bit of a dog's breakfast. The main change is that it's much lighter than the previous version. Also the new model has Oasis coatings, whereas the old had HLT. I'm assuming this is an...

    Starting digiscoping with Nikon Fieldscopes

I have the ED78 and ED50 Nikon Fieldscopes with DS eyepieces and would like to start digiscoping, but am not sure which direction to take. I have a Canon Ixus 60 and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. Am I better to sell my cameras and buy a Nikon compact and digiscoping kit? If so, which camera and...

Replacement rainguards for Leupold Yosemite 6x30?

I lost the rainguards for these binoculars recently and replacements seem to be hard to find. Can anyone advise me where I could find some? I don't mind what make the replacements are, but I want the flexible kind, not the straight. I'm in the UK, but I'm willing to order from abroad as long as...

    Wader at Cramond (Scotland)

I saw this wader recently and can think of lots of things it can't be (or shouldn't be) but I don't know what it is. It's the one standing to the left of the Redshank in one picture and to the right in the other. It had light-coloured legs, greyish-green or maybe greyish yellow-green. Can anyone...

    Red-faced passerine, Scotland

I saw this bird in Bridge of Allan today (the one on the lower, right-hand branch) and couldn't identify it. My wife thought it might be a fledgling Goldfinch, but I didn't think so. Any ideas? Sorry for the poor photograph. It was a very tall tree and a low magnification camera. Michael

    Passerine at Blackness (Scotland)

I saw this bird today at Blackness. Does anyone know what it is? Michael

    Terns in Scotland

I saw some terns recently off the sea wall at Musselburgh. Black cap, grey upper wing with black tips, dark underwing, black underneath, white tail. None of them had streamers. I initially thought they were Black Tern, even though not perfect for that. I later learned that Arctic Tern can be...

    Wader (Scotland)

I saw this bird from a distance. It had a long bill (which might have had a slight upwards curve), long legs, including long thighs. The leg colour could have been anything from yellow to orangey. At one point it had a white bar on the side, but then it didn't. It seemed to have a grey head and...

    Woodpecker? NW England

I saw this bird from the window of our holiday cottage near Leighton Moss in Lancs. It sat for a short time in a monkey puzzle tree. It was black and white with a red crown. The vertical bars were almost rectangular and the horizontal bars quite pronounced. It had a white nape. My first reaction...

How does the Elite 7x26 hang?

The Bushnell Elite 7x26 is now available in this country at a slightly less extortionate price, so I'm thinking again about getting a pair. My Olympus 8x25 reverse porros are pretty good, but they hang quite badly. My 60mm IPD exacerbates this effect, but it's partly just part of the reverse...

    Raptor, Scotland

I saw this bird in Bridge of Allan, Central Scotland. My first impression was that it was too big to be a Buzzard, though I know Buzzards vary greatly in size. Also, aren't the wings too long for a Buzzard? Michael

    Warbler, Scotland

I saw this bird on the Heritage Trail at Vane Farm. Some people who were watching it before I arrived said it was a Garden Warbler. I didn't have my hearing aids in, so I couldn't verify by song, but the bill doesn't look right for a Garden Warbler, does it? Later on, at Kilmahog, I saw a...

    Head for Nikon ED78

I had been using my ED78 on an old Slik head, but it finally died. I then switched to using a spare Velbon PHD-31Q head as a stopgap, but it's obviously not sturdy enough for the purpose, so I need a new head. As soon as I started looking, my head started to swim. There all kinds of heads by a...

    RSPB 8x32 HD

Every time I go into Vane Farm I spend some time trying this out. My conclusion is that it's excellent. Especially for its small size, the optical quality is superb. The nice lady who works there has one and she loves it. I would have no hesitation in buying it and using it as my main bin if it...
