    In Bayahibe now...

Hi, I'm in Bayahibe with my family now and looking to do a day's birding. Sadly I managed to leave my binoculars at home - unbelievably stupid of me, I can only blame a really stressful time recently! So, if anyone still drops into this forum, are there any nearby guides and anywhere in the...

Colakli May 2014 - information please

Cheers. Would be nice to see the fish owls as well (but not if it's going to cost more than about £60...) :t:

Colakli May 2014 - information please

Hi I will be on holiday in Colakli in late May; just wondering what there might be to see and whether there are any local bird guides? I've seen that site that links up with bird guides around the world, but to be honest it is far too expensive for me. I would LOVE to see Masked Shrike more...

    Help for Kent list gaps

Fantastic! I've been trying for 100 in a day (in Kent) for a few years and haven't got above 90. I wonder what the ideal time of year and location(s) would be?

    Tunisia tours, guides etc?

Hi I'm going to Hammamet for a week with my family in February and would like to spend one day birding. Does anyone know of birding tours or guides that won't cost the earth and will give me a good chance of getting a good Day List? Cheers James

    Foreness Friday?

This Friday morning supposed to be good conditions to go somewhere like Foreness Point. Thinking about driving down there from Maidstone area, anyone else thinking about it? I could give others a lift to save fuel costs. Only thing is, I don't have a scope at the moment, so will probably want a...

    ID questions from Nigeria

Thanks for the reply, I think Green woodhoopoe is probably right. Does anyone else agree/disagree? Any ideas on the other species? Is there any small bird with a sky blue band across the chest? I have one more ID question from this weekend, a pair of birds seen in small trees at the confluence...

    ID questions from Nigeria

I spent the weekend birding at Jos Plateau in Nigeria. Jos is near the centre of Nigeria, slightly to the north-west and is quite high, although I don't know the altitude. There are a couple of birds that I really cannot identify and wonder whether anyone might be able to assist. In a small...

    Piping Hornbill - sound file?

Does anyone have a sound file or a link to one with the call/song of the piping hornbill please? I think I saw one in Nigeria, although it wasn't a lowland area, so I am not sure.

    Gonoleks - Nigeria

Hi Has anyone got a sound file they can send me or post here, or a link for one for: Laniarius erythrogaster (yellow crowned gonolek) Laniarius barbarus (black headed gonolek) I am sure I saw a pair of them today, but only briefly in flight. However, I did hear them first. Cheers James

Hi all I'd be grateful for any information anyone has about birding in Nigeria, specifically around Abuja. Sites to visit, tour guides, etc would be very useful. Thanks James

    Birding in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Hutovo Blato I went to Hutovo Blato, supposedly an excellent bird habitat and the Bosnian nature reserve in which hunting is banned, on Sunday. I booked a boat trip out to the lake, the receptionist at the hotel assuring me there would be lots of birds there as winter is the best time. I was...

Mystery grey bird near Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

My friend Brane, the ornithologist from BiH, suspects that the bird was a ring ouzel and discounts fieldfare. He also knows local habitat and geography. Another friend has suggested ring ouzel, subspecies alpestris. I'll never know, but it has at least been thought-provoking.

Another theory on the mystery bird, as posted on the separate thread is ring ouzel, subspecies alpestris: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=102001

    Birding in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Good call, I think it seems like the most likely species. I had considered it, but as there was only one on its own and no sign of any others, thought it perhaps unlikely. Nothing else seems close though.

Mystery grey bird near Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

I suspect that you are right. The light must have distorted the appearance of the bird. Very frustrating, as I watched the bird for some time and could see it clearly, albeit from a distance. I'm sure it was too small to be a buzzard and the band was too low on the breast and too narrow for a...

    Birding in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Me either, it was probably something very common, but distorted by the light. Strange though, I had no 'feeling' of what it could be at all - it didn't seem like a raptor or a thrush. Ah well, never mind, it's just yet another bird to add to the list of unknowns. I hope that a few birders will...

Mystery grey bird near Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

This is a very crude drawing of the breast of the bird, the white band was very clear, hence I had ruled out sparrowhawk or the common thrushes.

    Birding in Bosnia & Herzegovina

When I was there, they said the water level was too low to go out to the lake and I didn't find a path to go all the way there - so it was a Nature Reserve where you can't see nature! I still got the species mentioned though, and plan to go back in December, when I hope to see a few wintering...

Mystery grey bird near Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

On Sunday I saw the following bird at Park Vrelo Bosne at Ilidža, just outside Sarajevo. The park is home to the sources of the river Bosne, has mixed woodland and lies at the foot of a (relatively small) mountain. The bird was sitting on a high branch of a tall tree. It was a similar size and...

    Birding in Bosnia & Herzegovina

I have been working in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina since 3 September and have been birding as often as possible. Bosnia seems to be uncharted territory for most birders, so here are some details of my birding in this country. The weekend before last I went birding with Brane, a Bosnian Serb...

    Neretva Delta

I am thinking of going to the Neretva Delta in Croatia this weekend (22-23 September) and just wondered whether anyone has any information about the area? Can anyone recommend the best places to go, etc? I will be driving there from Bosnia & Herzegovina and may visit Hutovo Blato as well. Are...

    Kite, harriers, etc

Just thought I'd share some details of my birding day on Monday. I was travelling from Boston, Lincs to Leeds, so stopped at the RSPB Montagu's harrier viewpoint at Digby Fen, where I was lucky enough to see great views of very active juveniles as well as the adult male and female. A great tick...

    Perthshire tips please

Thanks for the tips, I may only get one brief trip out, so it looks like Loch of the Lowes or Kinnordy. Although I am trying to persuade my wife that we should take a drive across Rannoch Moor, which I assume is good for birds too? Tentsmuir also looks good, can you tell me anything about that?

    Perthshire tips please

I'll be spending a few days staying in Scone near Perth with family in August and hope to nip out for a few hours' birding at some point. I was thinking about a trip to Loch of the Lowes to see the ospreys - is there anything else to look for at that site? Went to Vane Farm last time I was up...
