    Stock dove

OK, not a mega rarity but a nice garden tick when I opened the blinds this morning. Could only grab a couple of quick snaps with my mobile. Sent from my VOG-L09 using Tapatalk

    Hawke Endurance 8x56 binoculars

Many years ago, I had a pair of Hawke Prostalk 8x56 which were superb. A burgeoning family meant that a new pushchair was required in a bit of a hurry so something had to give...and I've regretted it every day since. Every. Day. Fast forward to this year and a significant birthday loomed. The...

    Prostalk ED 8x56

I really regret having sold my Prostalks the year before last. I'm in the market for some more now but they don't seem to be produced anymore. I've seen the Barr & Stroud Savannah 8x56 which look similar. Has anyone had any experience of both? How do they compare? Thank you.

    'ladybug' type for id please?

Sorry for poor photo but found this tiny little insect about 10 mins ago. Any ideas on id please? Not clear on photo but it's head was a creamy colour with black spots. Thanks in advance.

    Beware of scammers!

Taken from the Astro Buy Sell site. Just a heads up. If looks too good to be true, it probably is... http://www.astrobuysell.com/uk/propview.php?view=57786

    Railway deforestation

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34529 Looks like a petition that could do with some support. The line that runs near us is a great haven for wildlife.

Not as easy as it looks!

So I set off to Farlington Marshes yesterday on a 3 fold mission: - a father's day treat for myself; to seek the glossy ibis and; to try out my digiscoping equipment. The first was a great success; the second a dismal failiure; the third - well, judge for yourself! I'm using a Nikon RAiii...

    Books on-line?

Where is the best place (other than Amazon, eBay and Abe) to purchase 2nd hand birding books on the interweb please? All recommendations gratefully sought. Thank you.

    Feathers

Can anyone help ID these feathers for me please? Found by my 5 yr old on the way home from school at Epsom Common. My first thought is GSW as we have plenty about. The larger feather has a bluish tinge to the bottom edge though - might not be evident on the photo. Many thanks. Hugh

    Looking for 'car' bins

I'm on the look out for a new pair of bins to fit the following criteria and thought I'd draw on the collective expertise here: - - Roof prism preferred over porros for space saving - Not more than £130 - 8x42 (or larger). Certainly no smaller and no more/less magnification I spend a fair bit...

    Record recording programs

I have always used the BTO Birdtrack system for recording my findings. I'm finding their ways a little off putting of late though. I will continue to record on BirdTrack, as I'm sure the data is valuable, but are there any other programs for recording finds etc? I would prefer it to be...

    Visionary FieldTracker Graphite 8x42

Does anyone have any experience of these bins at all? Seem like good value for money, but are they any good in the field? Thanks in advance. Hugh

    Mice

Interesting question raised.by my 5 yr old on the way to school this morning: - Which of our (British) mice hibernate? I was tempted to say all, but is that true?

    Notebooks

Any recommendations for a good, hardback notebook for recording field observations please? Near the end of mine and can't recall where it came from!

    Epsom Common

I'm always surprised that Epsom Common (and adjoining Ashtead Common) are overlooked birding wise. A mixture of Surrey heartland, deciduous woodland, scrub and a couple of interesting ponds, make this a great place to bird. A jewel within the M25. I'm not a great numbers person, for me it's...

    Twist up eyecups

I've recently picked up a very nice, 2nd hand pair, of Celestron 8x42 Outland LXs. Lovely pair of bins for the car/garden. They have a slight problem in that the left hand twist up eyecup won't stay in place. Even very light pressure from resting in my eye socket results in it going back down...

    Painted ladies

Ok, I cheated a bit. These are from a butterfly garden kit front Insect Lore. Of 10 caterpillars sent,9 made chrysallises and four have 'hatched' (?) today. Don't know if this is frowned upon, but it has certainly kept my 5 year old fascinated and watching the butterflies emerge today has been...

    Hello from Sunny England!

Just found this site so had to join up. Did a lot of birding while I was growing up, then it got brushed aside by other things. Now have been getting back into it. Lucky enough to live right on Epsom Common so go there virtually every day. Used to live a couple of mile from Farlington...
