    First Butterflies 2024

    After an arctic blast last week with much ice & heavy frost, it's turned much milder since the weekend, if stormy at times. Slightly surprised to see 2 Red Admirals about in Kew Gardens today, even though I know they can be seen in any month.

    October Moth

    Given the overcast & mild night (15C) a rather meagre catch in an Ealing park this morning with 17 moths of 12 species. Highlights a Barred Sallow, Deep-brown Dart & Blair's Shoulder-not. Most numerous with 3 a piece were Tachystola acroxantha & Lesser Yellow Underwing.

    April Moths 2023

    Having a walk around one of my local sites had an Orange Underwing near a stand of the larval food plant- birch & while eating my lunch had a specimen of Adela cuprella land at my feet.

    A cool night with min of 5C & a rather quiet catch with in a west London reserve: 11 Diurnea lipsiella Feathered Thorn Red-green Carpet Merveille du-Jour

    February Moths 2022

    Went to our monthly session in a local woodland nature reserve in west London. A milder, overcast night yielded 6 species. Tortricodes alternella 16 Common Quaker 2 Small Brindled Beauty 2 Dotted Border 3 Hebrew Character Pale Brindled Beauty

    UK Dragonflies & Damselflies 2021

    I see the first sighting has been seen & photographed. A Vagrant Emperor near Torpoint, Cornwall on 24th Feb as reported by Adrian Parr. With Saharan dust forecast it was predicted that this species might turn up in northern Europe.

    New dragonfly for UK

    Just read on Atropos migrant site that Adrian Parr has announced that a male Yellow-spotted Emerald, Somatochlora flavomaculata, has been recorded at Carlton Marshes, Suffolk today. Doesn't mention photos but there seems no ambiguity about this. Great record for the finder!

    Over the last 2-3 weeks there seems to have been an unprecedented number of Hawfinches moving through. Here in the London area there have been multiple site sighting everyday of mostly flyovers over this time period. Normally only a couple of sightings each winter. Any ideas on the origins of...

    Has anyone who has been to see the Southern Emerald Damselflies at Cliffe RSPB Reserve this year got any info as to the best place to look for them as I maybe going there over the weekend?

    Does anyone know whether there are any day pelagics from Penzance this August? Can't find any info for this year on the web, so thinking maybe not.

    First butterflies 2011

    Had my first butterfly of the year today at midday- a Red Admiral flying round a garden in SW London + then settling on some bare compost in a raised bed, basking in the pleasant sunshine. Looked in good nick too!
