    Osprey?

Is it likely I saw an Osprey in Gravesend today 02/09/2011? It was 17:15 hrs, I looked across towards where the river Thames would be and high in the sky I saw a large raptor. At first I though it was a Heron but there was not the usual gangley flight and lopping wing / crunched up neck. I...

How do I get an abandoned nestbox back in use?

Hi all, My robin abandoned the nest in a robin box due to a cat attack 4 days ago. She didn't come back so I have removed the three cold eggs. What should I do with the nest material? Do I leave it in or take it out? Naturally I want a new resident. Thanks

Three eggs in total, one perched on the edge of the nest box, the other two burried in the nest material, all cold as stone.:C One of the eggs was cracked and after a little prod, my daughter...

She's deffo in and I think brooding

Okay. We are in business. She's in and has done some extraordinary housework. She has built the nest up and some of the material has overflowed so that it's very difficult to get any sort of view inside. I don't want to disturb her so I will have to wait for the frantic in / out activity of...

    Robin in the box

We got back from a weeks away in Cornwall. My first job was to check out the nestboxes. There she was, PEG, sitting in the nestbox, checking us out. I bet she's a bit miffed that we've come back and no doubt the boys will create noise playing football. I will watch for a while and see if I...

    No need to worry

I was a bit worried for the last couple of days as I we had not seen PEG or her mate. I asked around about nest abandonment and discovered that the act of nest building stimulates mateing. I next thought that PEG may have been captured by the cat next door, or perhaps she was sitting on the...

Got back from night shift at 0630 (1st April) and spent half an hour watching out the back first floor window. It was certainly a busy time for all. PEG was in and out with lots of material. She was none too pleased that a magpie was down on the lawn. She kept an eye on him and waited till he...

On the trail of Bittern (Ruxley, Kent)

A lovely 3.5 hours walk around the old chalk pits at Crittles Corner, Ruxley, near Orpington, Kent. Whilst walking around the lakes bumped into another birder who was very familiar with the site. He pointed out where AT LEAST TWO Bittern hang out. I stuck with him in the hope that I'd get my...

    Feeding Frenzy in Swanly garden

Monday morning and for most it's the start of another week. For me, as a shift worker, there isn't a "start of the week", just days off, or days / nights working. Today for me is a day off, and it's quiet. The kids are at school, and I intend to do a few simple chores to keep the wife happy. I...

Crittles Corner Lakes - St Pauls Cray, Kent

Great day out. Hooked up again with Dantheman and showd him my favorite local place to bird. This location is from my boyhood (age 13 yrs up) and has been somewhere I go to chill out for a whole day. It's a secure, private fishing lake complex and is a little difficult to get into but once...

Hi all, My wonderful wife bought for me a voucher for £90 to spend on a nestbox with a camera. She bought this in 2008 !, and due to a new extension I never got round to ordering it. Hi all, Not been on site for a while. Just had holiday to Menorca, Spain. Just like to ask, what are the chances that.... The Orphean Warbler I thought I saw was a Blackcap? The Greenfinchs' were Siskins'? And that I did see a Moustached Warbler. I ask this as the identification book I have...
