What flycatcher sound is this? Upstate NY

It was along a road on edge of a yard and woods. Yeah, I think you are right about Phoebe. I got another response that indicated Phoebe as well. Apparently this one was only making the first part of its usual song. It's always the commonest, most familiar birds that confuse. For some reason I...

What flycatcher sound is this? Upstate NY

Did you consider Acadian Flycatcher? To me it sounds like Acadian. I listened to this recording side by side with Acadian and it sound the same. I hear Alder all the time and this sounded at a bit different. I'm not sure either way. Some of the Alder sounds I listened sounded somewhat similar.

What flycatcher sound is this? Upstate NY

There is a car going by in the middle but there are several calls on both ends of the audio. You might need to turn up the volume to hear it. I am sure it is a Flycatcher, and I am pretty sure on what flycatcher it is but I want confirmation.

    ocean bird field guide

Sibley is great - his illustrations of ocean birds are really good. I think Birds of Europe (ISBN: 0691050546) also has great illustrations and id tips for ocean birds. I don't know of any books solely on ocean birds but I am sure there are some out there.

Is the Nikon 60x 75x Wide Angle 7671B eyepiece good? Has anyone here had experience with this eyepiece and how good is it? Thanks!

    Worm-eating Warbler?

Well, it probably isn't breeding habitat for Worm-eating but it is migration and in our area the few that have been seen over the years are usually not in good breeding habitat. I thought of Chipping Sparrow as well. We have many of them. In fact that is what I thought is was at first and I...

    Worm-eating Warbler?

Here is a recording that I took yesterday. It sounds like a Worm-eating Warbler to me. We heard the song about 40 times. There are three songs in the recording at 5, 21, 52 seconds. Looking at it in RavenLite the frequency appears to be perfect. Also we played a recording hoping to call it in...

    Duck ID, NY

Anyone care to make a guess as to what these are. I only had my 18-135mm so I wasn't able to get the best photos as they were far away. I think they are Hooded Mergansers.

Is this sound a Long-eared Owl?

Yeah, I thought it had some sort of Saw-whet quality as well. Maybe it's the spacing and length of the calls. So I thought maybe it was a Boreal as they are closely related but Boreal doesn't sound anything like it. The sound clip really isn't that good. I am going to try again tomorrow but...

Is this sound a Long-eared Owl?

Today we had a probable owl down the road from us. It was vocalizing quite a bit but as we approached it stopped. We couldn't find it even though we looked pretty well. It sounds somewhat like a cross between a dog and an owl. I am almost certain that it isn't a dog as there were no tracks in...

That was my first thought as well.

    What Bird? West Central Indiana

I didn't listen to the whole thing as I do not have the bandwidth for movies and I didn't realize when I clicked it that it was but it sounds like a Pileated Woodpecker [or maybe a Northern Flicker] to me.

    Owl Whitewash ID

The photo isn't mine but I saw at a local place very similar whitewash (I didn't think about Owls until I got home). I'm going to go back tonight and see if I can find any pellets or other clues.

I think I've got a good ID on this one but figured it would be good to get confirmation.

Anyone else doing/done a Big Green Big Year?

Well, most of New York State does not have public transport. I did a Bigby last year here in upstate NY and the best I could do is about 145. Many hills and long distances to reach and good birding areas. But I would say that someone near the coast would do much better.
