    Butterflies in highland

According to the 'Atlas of Butterflies in Highland and Moray', Green Hairstreak are most often seen in the central Spey Valley, so anywhere near Aviemore with a decent amount of Blaeberry and Gorse should be good Pearl-Bordered Fritillary has quite a local distribution, and is declining, so...

    Lowepro Field Station

Take a look at the Country Innovation Field Pouch -I suspect it's a little bit smaller, but it'll carry bins, field guide and a few other bits and pieces with no problems. I have one, and I tend to use it when out looking for moths and butterflies. It easily carries my folding net, all the...

Which E Reader is the best for storing my Bird,Butterfly and Dragonfly Books on.

If you're wanting colour, then realistically, you're going to want a Tablet, rather than an E-reader. Currently, the latest iPad has the sharpest screen for reading, viewing pictures, etc.

    Craghoppers Kiwi winter lined trousers

That's patently untrue. Blacks (or whoever they are now), Cotswold and Tiso are all significantly more expensive than Go Outdoors when it comes to outdoor clothing. In saying that, It's always better to hunt around to find the best prices before buying. (in the case of footwear, though -...

    Poplar Hawkmoth Caterpillars....

I'll take some of those eggs off you, if you've got them going spare! ;-)

    Halfords Power Pack 200

It's not too shabby. You don't get as many moths as you would with an MV trap, but it certainly has its moments. I also find that actinic lights can attract some different moths - ones which MV traps don't.

    Halfords Power Pack 200

I use one of them. They're heavier than they look, to warn you. When using the inverter, I get about 6-7 hours continuous use powering a 22w actinic setup. If you can use a 12v setup, and avoid using the inverter, it'll last longer, since it won't have to power the inverter. It's not a good...

    Cat for Id

    Drinker? Admittedly, that's a guess.

    April Moths

Lucky for some... I had absolutely nothing in the trap last night. Gutted :-(

    Tayforth Birding

Agreed - I almost always manage to get Spotted Flycatcher there, as well as all the usual suspects. It's a nice walk, too.

    Unknown caterpillar - UK

I'd guess Garden Tiger with this one, but it's not the best angle for the photo, to be honest.

    Scottish Moth ID, please.

Well done, Stonefaction! A good record! :-) Methinks i'm now gonna have to make the trip to the Morton Lochs with my moth trap! :-)

    Scottish Moth ID, please.

Interesting - looks like Sword-grass for me, too. What is interesting, is that apparently the only sword-grass records for Fife are old ones from the Isle of May, so that could be an exceptionally good record! There are quite a lot of Dark Sword-grass out early this year, so potentially it's...

    Tayforth Birding

We had at least 3 calling Willow Warbler at Cullaloe today, and our swans are on nest just now, too. In non-birding news, My first Orange-Tip butterfly for the year at Cullaloe, too!

    Dark Sword-grass??

Thanks guys, I'd also had confirmation elsewhere. An exceptionally early example in Scotland... and a good catch for me! :)

    Dark Sword-grass??

Caught this one last night... Am I right in saying Dark Sword-grass? It's a bit early... ok, I know they can be found at more or less any time, but still, the common times are August - October. I can't seem to find anything that matches as well, though, so confirmation would be appreciated.

    Tayforth Birding

Not too badly, so far! We've had to take down the feeders now, due to lack of funds for the food. Luckily, it hasn't stopped the birds appearing, so there's still plenty of birds to see (although woodpeckers are not quite as common anymore) We put up 40 bird/bat boxes (28 bird boxes, 12 bat...

Had Chiffchaffs singing at Lochore Meadows yesterday and Cullaloe today. Also plenty of Sand Martins at Lochore Meadows - Spring has sprung! :-)

    March Moths

I had my trap out on Tuesday night (22nd) and had both lots and not a lot, all at the same time... I had 2 species, but 51 moths - 31 Hebrew Character and 20 Common Quaker! Could do with a bit more variety here, though! Mind you, with the night time temperature supposed to be dropping now...

    Tayforth Birding

Had my first singing Skylark of the year today, on the way up Ben Cleuch - spring is definitely here (although you wouldn't know it from the foot deep snow at the top!)

    March Moths

Put my trap out last night for the first time this year... 4 Hebrew Character and 1 Dotted Border. Good enough for me to consider it the start of my mothing year! :)

A good Rucksack - at last..

Take a look at the new Berghaus Freeflow Pro rucksacks... the air gap isn't nearly as large as the older models, so much easier to pack - yet still have the brilliant airflow system.

    Walking Boots

In fairness, I had the heel problem with a pair of Merrell shoes, which had rave reviews... Achilles Tendonitis (which is what I had) can be caused by any shoe or boot. It all depends on your foot. That's a definite recommendation when it comes to buying walking shoes/boots. ALWAYS try them on...
