    Mallorca 2017

Evening guys, not birding this year so no bins to use but saw what I am guessing were 5 Eleanora's falcons hunting over the beach at Camp de Mar this evening from about 9:30. I am assuming id on the basis that we have seen them here at this time of year whenever we have come and somebody on a...

    Nikon prostaff 7s 8 x 42 vs Nikon monarch 7 8 x 42

Just an update, couldn't find anybody stocking the Prostaff locally so went to my local In-focus (I am lucky in that I have one a couple of miles away), tried out 5 different pairs and bought a pair of Hawke 8x32 for £159. I did try the updated Opticron Traveller too but felt the view was too...

    Nikon prostaff 7s 8 x 42 vs Nikon monarch 7 8 x 42

I've been looking at the second hand market George but not really come across anything that I consider a good deal. I'm not saying that is a bad deal but for another £40 I could buy a pair with a guarantee valid for another 29 years and 6 months - notwithstanding the obvious accident risks

    Nikon prostaff 7s 8 x 42 vs Nikon monarch 7 8 x 42

Just looked at HDEW again and they are only Monarch 5 that they sell. Bu99er :smoke: Need to track down a pair of the prostaff to try out. Thanks David

    Nikon prostaff 7s 8 x 42 vs Nikon monarch 7 8 x 42

Morning all I'm looking to replace a pair of Delta s 10 x 42 which I dropped onto concrete at the weekend. Although a costly mistake I can't say that I am sad to see them go - never really felt that they were easy to use, they were soft off centre which I found disconcerting, looking at...

    Micro Four-Thirds

No worries Jules. My main interest is how the bare 400 comes out softer than the 400 plus 1.4x. If that is right getting e.g. a Panasonic gx8 and metabones for video with my 400 would be a waste - I might just as well go for the native 100-300 and not bother with the metabones. Tis fascinating...

    Micro Four-Thirds

Hi Jules, I am presuming that as you have given the section of the target at the same size for each set-up that you have cropped each shot, meaning that e.g. the bare 400 image has half the pixels of the 400 plus 2x image. Likewise the 1.4x shot has 1.4x the pixels compared to the naked lens.

    New canon camera

For family photos each would suffice For family video either the 70D or 7D mkii would do due to the dual pixel AF but you would have to use a lens with STM for the smooth focusing BIF I would plump for the 7D mkii - never tried one but if the AF is good as it is reported to be by those who...

Video "wind shake" vs Panasonic image stabilization?

Thanks Ivel, I suspected that a more appropriate tripod was the best solution but like you I'm not keen on carrying the added weight. Still, if that is the only solution then it might have to be. I like watching waders on English beaches and they're not the stillest of places at the best of...

Video "wind shake" vs Panasonic image stabilization?

Well, that's interesting Mike. Not sure how I would attach it to my fluid head - will have a look on a full size screen once I am properly awake. I did consider a heavier tripod too or possibly a carbon fibre version Thanks Paul

Video "wind shake" vs Panasonic image stabilization?

Simply put, I mainly use a Canon 70D with a 400 f5.6 and n a slight breeze I can see 'wobble' in the recordings - in a stronger breeze the video becomes unusable. If I swap over and use my SX50 bridge camera I can get vibration free video but of a much lower quality. I am guessing that the i.s...

    Metabones adapter

Thanks for the reply Dan and that makes sense now. So does that Metabones adapter give 2x equivalent? If it does and works with a tc that's very impressive - can't say that I have ever felt the 400 f5.6 and tc on my 70D was up to anything more than 20' for shooting reasonable quality Paul

    Metabones adapter

That's interesting reading Dan and what looks like good image quality. Do you get the 2x FOV equivalent with the 400 f5.6? I only ask because I noted in one of the threads you provided a link for you mentioned that on one occasion you left the IBIS set to 400 rather than 600mm which would be...

    windows 10

I have tried the upgrade from Windows 7 too now and also had video problems, however I had the same issues when I upgraded the same laptop to Windows 8 when it came out. I had hoped that the issue would be sorted out with this version but am now confident it will never happen. So I have done...

    Metabones adapter

Niels, was that with the Metabones do you remember? 4K video would, for me, be a God send in that I could step through it frame by frame and select from hundreds or thousands of images for reference material for painting. But it would be a commitment to a whole new system. It is also one of...

    Metabones adapter

I think that a Metabones Speedbooster would reduce the crop factor to 1.4x rather than the 2x crop that putting an EF adapter on a GH4 would normally produce. Not claiming any expertise but I do know a guy who was experimenting with the latter setup and 500 f4 and it was definitely 2x. I am sure...

    Optician scopes for digiscoping?

N.B. title should read "Opticron" it's not the first time my spell check has over ruled me Hi, I am contemplating "upgrading" my old Opticron classic to a MM3 60, not for the sole purpose of digiscoping but as an extra consideration. I have only ever briefly tried taking photos through it...

    Canon 500mm F4 lens - should I get one

I would think that whilst you could get some good shots with the MF, in the longer-term you would view it as a wasted opportunity. Buying the old lens will only give you a taster for what might have been - and if you are anything like me you'll still want more. It will be a heavier lens so...

It's a very important point you make about 35mm gear - we're spoiled rotten these days but we still want more. Affordable and high quality digital gear has opened up a world of possibilities for everyone.
