Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2011 Updates

Hi there, Are there any updates re: Great Spotted Woodpeckers in Ireland this year? Are they spreading West and North? Where can they be observed? VJ

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Might keep an eye here further up North to check for any random GSWs. Probably wishful thinking to expect that one will actually turn up though.

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

This probably sounds like a stupid question but are woodlands the obvious location to look for GSWs?

Great to see this bird here up North.

Any recent sightings northwards of Wicklow etc?

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Following all the recent sightings and the media coverage heralding the 'return' of the GSW to Ireland, are we really seeing the species re-establish itself on the island or is it an irruption that will come to naught?

Nice list, I can see remnants of Gaelic and German in quite a few.

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Birdwatch features the new breeders also. So, there we have it....they now breed here and can survive. No reintroduction needed, they'll do it all by themsleves.

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

We can't tell either way, but I defer to Chris Mead's analysis. As I say, all the evidence points towards the GSW taking up residence here of its own accord so the reintroduction question is, perhaps, redundant. I choose to believe that the GSW was indeed once a resident on this island...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Chris Mead link as referenced above: http://www.birdcare.com/bin/showsonb?great+spotted+woodpecker It looks like GSW is recolonising Ireland under its own steam anyway without the assistance of a reintroduction programme.

So where did this information come from? They cannot have made it up. From whaht source text are they quoting? When you say 'potentially inaccurate' isn't it equally the case that this information may actually be accurate?

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Are we then to disregard everything written by Gordon d'Arcy in 'Ireland's Lost Birds' on the subject? Surely he would not have created a myth of the GSW. Also note the follwoing references BTO - Chris Mead "evidence of GSW bones from pre-Christian times in Ireland" 'Finding Birds in Ireland...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Despite the previous posts, nobody has provided evidence that GSW did not exist in Ireland. It is of course easy to say "Ireland does not have GSW" because we don't, but where is the evidence to say that we never did? Isn't it just too easy to dismiss the whole idea as rubbish rather than...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

It all sounds very bleak. Surely the IWT isn't pedalling unsound whimsy as the basis for a project. Why aren't the experts on this forum forwarding their impact information to the IWT then, because the project is 'ongoing' according to their website.

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Whilst I concur with the majority of this post I can't understand the resistance to the IWT project. Why not reintroduce the GSW....the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. As part of a wider drive to reforest this treeless island the reintroduction of the GSW would IMO bring a range of...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

The IWT believes that the reintroduction of the GSW would be a major pro-active conservation move for a number of different wildlife species e.g. pied flycatcher, redstart, red squirrel, pine marten and several tree-dwelling bat species as woodpeckers are the architects and landlords of the...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

If you look at reintroductions in general the trend has been to reintroduce birds of prey and other 'sexy' headline-grabbing birds. I can't see any evidence that the Golden Eagles, WT Eagles and Red Kites are being introduced to improve our ecosystem here. Smaller birds tend not to reintroduced...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

Yes, we do want woodpeckers! And we want more woodland to support them! They were once resident here and they should be again. Woodpeckers may predate some young birds, but don't we have healthy populations of common birds to withstand such predation. Woodpeckers are integral to woodland...

    Why no Woodpeckers in Ireland

In my humble opinion, Glenveagh National Park (Donegal) would be a perfect woodpecker reintroduction site....anyone know where the Irish reintroduction project is at??
