    Essex Birding

Thanks Steve. The Met Office forecast for Southend tomorrow http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/southend-on-sea_forecast_weather.html is for light southeasterlies, presumably not the sort of conditions that are going to be that good for seawatching?

Is it better to seawatch from Canvey Point or Canvey seafront? Not knowing the area, any help would be much appreciated.

    Poor behaviour by birders

'Back to the good old days where only the acceptable few were allowed to go twitching' is not what I'm advocating at all otherwise why would I give up a couple of hours a day updating a county sightings board? What I'm really after is some ideas on the best way to make birding information...

    Poor behaviour by birders

Perhaps it just me getting old and grumpy but does anyone else share my conerns about the increasing number of incidents of poor behaviour by birders? I moderate the Sussex Ornithological Society's sightings board which in the last few months has had messages about trespassing and poor behaviour...

    Ruddy Duck cull continuing

I'm sure this has been discussed at length elsewhere but the culling of ruddy ducks continues http://www.sos.org.uk/recent-sightings/index.php If you still have ruddy ducks in your county and don't want them exterminated, it might be wise to say very little about them and not mention locations...

    Oman RFI

Due to a change in flight timings I now find myself with a day to spare in Muscat (Oman) on the way to Nepal. My intention is to spend the time I have birding. It sounds as if the area round Muscat is undergoing a lot of changes at the moment so would welcome suggestions of good places to go...

    emperor penguin on NewZealand mainland

I'm a bit surprised this is only their second record. When I visited NZ last year we stayed on Stewart Island for a few days. I seem to recall seeing a photo that someone had taken previously of an Emperor on the beach with the pub in the background by where the ferry goes from.

    BBC Twitching Documentary

I'm with you Phil W on this one. I rarely go twitching these days but do enjoy seeing the occasional rarity for what it is. For example whenever I see a Pallas's Warbler I am always in awe of how far such a small bird has come to get here. Not being an active lister, I have no interest in who...

    BBC Twitching Documentary

In fairness a programme such as this was never going to portray the main characters in a particularly favourable light. Every hobby and pastime will have its more extreme and obsessive individuals, some of which last night's programme inevitably concentrated on. I did find Garry's obsessive...

    Sussex Birding

The Shorelark (there was only ever one) was last seen at Cuckmere Haven on Sunday so very likely that it has gone too.

    Sussex Birding

Had a look for it on Sunday. No sign - the previous night had been very clear with a full moon so ideal conditions for it to go.

    Linnet or Twite- Suffolk

Selsey West Beach is the area immediately beyond the West Beach caravan park at Selsey, approx grid ref SZ832942. If you drive through the caravan park you come to a gate where you can park and continue on foot below the shingle sea wall towards the Bracklesham Bay RSPB reserve which lies inland...

    Linnet or Twite- Suffolk

Twite is now a description species in Sussex so time to fill out an unusual record form especially as it sounds from the location that it's a different bird to the two at Selsey West Beach...

Just wondered if anyone knows what the current parking situation is at Farlington Marshes? Is it as limited as the HWT website suggests? Would also like to know whether it is still a hotspot for car break ins?

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Westland petrel at Punakaiki on the NZ west coast in August. Large numbers fly in from the sea at dusk to nest in the adjacent forest.

    Linnet or Twite- Suffolk

Shame it was in Suffolk. It would have been a very good bird for Sussex as they are now less than annual in the county.

    Sussex Birding

The 1983 SxBR refers to a single bird at Northpoint Pit on 6 Sept. It then moved to Pett Pools the following day and was joined by another on the 8th, with 3 there from 9th - 14th. One of these remained until the 18th and was seen again on 25th and 30th.

Honey Buzzard-sussex, UK (minus crappy photo!!)

We've all experienced those frustrating 'one that got away' moments. My suggestion is you forget about it and move on. If you are not sure it was a Honey Buzzard, you are unlikely to convince a records committee that you've got the identification right so it's probably not worth filling the form...

    Sussex Birding

The SOS website clearly needs updating with regard to Turtle Dove. I think most people would now agree that it is 'scarce' in Sussex though there are still some sites in the county (e.g. Arlington Reservoir) where it occurs regularly. I fear that in the next few years the time will come when...

    Sussex Birding

Ian makes a valid point here. As well as Wood Warbler, a quick trawl through the messages reveals mention of a pair of Marsh Harriers and also a couple of reeling Grasshopper Warbler at one of their few regular sites in the county. The 'Egg collector needs info' thread elsewhere on this website...

    Must see sites

Pevensey Levels can be good but equally you could go there and see very little as it is a very big area. It really is a case of knowing the best spots to visit and even then you may have to contend with mud, broken stiles, reeds that are too tall to see over and the like. Ternery Pool at Rye...

    Caspian gull?

Would welcome comments from people who know Caspian gull well as to whether they think this bird is one? It was photographed at Newhaven (East Sussex) on 6th March.
