Young Gulls Northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska

I am looking at the bird to the right. I know I have a Black-legged Kittiwake on the left, and a young Glaucous Gull but am wondering about the darker gull. The bill is a different shape and has more black on it. Was thinking it might be a Glaucous-winged Gull?

    Wood Warbler vs. Arctic Warbler

How does one tell the difference between Wood Warblers and Arctic Warblers? Here on the western shores of the Seward Peninsula Arctic Warbler is always the go to since a Wood Warbler would be a rare site although not out of the question. I am 99% sure the bird in the photo is an Arctic but with...

Female Blackpoll Warbler, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

I took this photo last night. Please confirm this is a female Blackpoll Warbler. I have not seen a Blackpoll Warbler in 10 years and that was a male.

    Pewee Seward Peninsula Alaksa

Western or Eastern Wood-Pewee? Seems odd but there are a pair of Easterns north of Nome. This was at a bit of distance and the other the wrong side of the sun.

Juvenile Gulls, Seward Peninsula Sept 2016

I am hoping somebody can help me identify these young gulls. I have never been very good with juvenile gulls around here. My colorblind eyes just don't work for me with them. The predominant large gull here are Glaucous Gulls but I see a decent number of Herring Gulls (many of which are Vega)...

    Shorebird, Seward Peninsula Alaska

Please confirm or correct, is this a Red Knot? Taken earlier this morning on the northern shoreline of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

    Cormorant

The most common cormorant here would be a Pelagic but I am used to seeing a white patch on the rump. So is this a young bird or a different species? Northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska

    Shorebirds, Seward Peninsula, AK

Found this pair of larger shorebirds on a.beach here on the northern Seward Peninsula. Over 10 inches tall. Bill was 2-3 inches. Photo taken with cell phone at 2am. Yeah the sun had not set yet. Lighter tail with black tip when.they flew.

3 Distant Photos of a Raptor (buteo?), Northern Seward Peninsula

Didn't get a great view of this guy as he was persuing shorebirds in flight. the first photo shows "fingers", which could point towards a Rough-legged Hawk but I have seen Harlan's here as well. Fairly broad-winged, narrow towards the tail. These are distant photos cropped way in.

    Sandpiper, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

I believe this is a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper but would like confirmation.

    Flycatcher, Northern Seward Peninsula, AK

Found this guy outside my house yesterday in Shishmaref, AK. The only flycatcher I have documented was an Olive-sided Flycatcher although Say's Phoebee, Alder Flycathcer and Western Wood Pewee are also possibilities. The call wasn't an Olive-sided Flycatcher.

    Dark-backed Gulls--Seward Peninsula, Alaska

The most likely dark-backed gulls here would be Slaty-backed but with recent sightings of Black-backed gulls in Barrow, I want to rule them out. The second bird seems much darker than the rest.

    Flycatcher, Northern Seward Peninsula

The first two photos shows an Olive-sided Flycatcher that I photographed tonight. The other three photos show another flycatcher that is unknown. I thought it was an Olive-sided too based on its call (not the "quick three beers" but three quick chirr-chirr-chirr). The call sounded like the...

    Raptor, Seward Peninsula, AK

Buteo? Definitely not a Rough-legged our main Buteo. The only other Buteo I have seen is a Harlan's once. Any thoughts? Other raptors are Peregrine, Merlin, and Northern Harrier.

Harlequin Duck? Northern Seward Peninsula, AK

I took this a few weeks ago. Very low light conditions as the sun was setting in the background. The bird appeared to be sleeping with its bill tucked under a wing but the spot behind the eye may be the key visible identification mark. It was near shore riding out the waves near our seawall.

Passerine ID Northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska

I know the bird on the right is an Arctic Warbler but I am struggling with the bird on the left.

    Shrike? Seward Peninsula, AK

Believe these are Northern Shrike, possibly Juveniles? Very loud playful birds.

    Red Knots? Seward Peninsula, Alaska

I believe these may be Red Knots but would like confirmation. I have seen one here several years ago but I saw 20 tonight and I believe around 10 a couple nights ago (no camera). As you can see in some of the photos they were quite a bit larger than the Dunlin that were mixed in.

    flycatcher Seward Peninsula, AK

Friend of mine from Koyuk (East of Nome) had this individual visit his camp where they were building a cabin. Olive-sided and Alder Flycatchers are noted on the Seward Peninsula. Thoughts?

    Raptor Seward Peninsula, AK

Very poor photos, I couldn't get to my camera fast enough while driving my boat down the river. Had an ok view of the bird while perched. I remember it having a light chest with dark markings. I had seen a harrier prior to this individual but I believe the tail is much too short to be a...

    Swallow, Northern Seward Peninsula, AK

This appears to be a run of the mill Barn Swallow, which would be a major migratory overshoot by the range maps I have looked at here in Shishmaref, AK. What I struggle with is the white patch on the left wing. All pics are of the same bird. Since this would be the first documented sighting...

Unknown Female Dabbling Duck-Seward Peninsula, AK

My friends and I cannot figure this one out. Photo quality is poor but with that said some of my friends are leaning towards Blue-winged Teal. I did not notice blue on the wings but it was also very very bright out. I brought this here to consider any Asian variables that might come into play...

Young Gulls, Northern Seward Peninsula, AK

A few for your pondering... The last two photos are of the same bird.

Unknown Raptor Northern Seward Peninsula, AK

I know it's a raptor and believe it a falcon. Three falcons here, Merlin, Peregrine, and Gyr (haven't seen one but know they are around). Is this one or something else. Realize this is a terrible photo but it was all I got of it.

    Unknown Southern Seward Peninsula, AK

This is a friends picture from the southern Seward Peninsula along Norton Sound. Not sure what it is.
