    Guide, Sinai, Egypt

It might be in Dahab. We went a few years ago. A very pleasant area, much smaller than Sharma El Sheik. All being well the holiday will be there. According to one report, 'UK travel advice to Egypt was updated at the start of January 2024. However, most tourist hotspots, such as Sharm El-Sheikh...

    Curlew Recovery South Lakes

Found out about this on a Facebook page. If you copy and paste ' Curlew Recovery South Lakes ' into google it should take you there. I used to cover this area before moving and only ever saw one Curlew chick which was soon predated by a crow, so I was pleased to see that four chicks were...

Questions about House Sparrows in UK

We inherited a very small garden when we bought our house- well over two thirds is paved. Within the paved area there are three trees. In the non- paved area there's a few small trees and bushes. We provide plenty of food for birds. Throughout the year around 20 House Sparrow are resident or...

A Nightingale was unlikely to sing in Berkely Square

Did a Blackbird sing at Adlestrop Station? Yes. I remember Adlestrop— The name, because one afternoon Of heat the express-train drew up there Unwontedly. It was late June. The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was...

    Sanyang, The Gambia

It's a few years since we've been there but I had no safety issues walking around with my bins and scope. I generally did my birdwatching alone ( my non- birding other half was sometimes with me, so she'd tag along depending on where and when I did my birdwatching). Avoiding being generally...

Upcoming trip to Egypt, asking for advices....

Had no problems with moving around freely on our trips to Egypt, or having equipment confiscated. Top tip: if you're visiting a dodgy country have a birdwatching book handy to show the authorities at the airport that you're visiting to birdwatch.

Short trip to Leighton Moss 26 -29 Feb 24

Glad you enjoyed your trip. Its a marvellous bird reserve; they've put in lot of hard work over the years. I only live 6 miles from there but haven't been for about 15 years - I'm allergic to hides. :D Also there's so many good birdwatching spots around here there's plenty of alternatives.

    Cuckoo in February?

' They have almost certainly mis-heard a collared dove'............. or a Woodpigeon. Some of them have been vocal recently in Cumbria. A woodpigeon was very vocal in our garden this morning in South Cumbria.

    Returning land to nature

Talking to the farmer who owns a large swathe of land in south Cumbria, he’s obtained a grant to fence it off and, in his words, he’s going to ‘leave it to nature.’ A good move since the alternative could have been to drain it off and give the whole area over to agriculture, or perhaps...

    Bird of prayer?

Our local rag recently produced a story about a Lanner Falcon. This was the headline on the website: VIDEO: See this bird of prayer rousing in the snowy weather :D

    Iceland

That may be so but we've cruised through areas chock a block with whales without having to go on whale watching trips- and Iceland wasn't one of them. As we sailed out of one of the Iceland ports I kept my eye on a whale-watching boat hoping it might find some. Sadly there was no sign anything...

    Iceland

We've done a couple of cruises around Iceland and didn't find the whale watching that brilliant to be honest. I spent a lot of time out on deck with my bins, mainly to watch birds, but if there were many whales around I would have picked them up. It was far more productive for whales father...

Why do Pied Wagtails walk on ice?

I 've seen Pied Wagtails walking on ice on several occasions. Today four were walking on parts of a lake which were frozen. They looked like they were searching for food, but what sort of food would they find on a stretch of frozen ice? There were plenty of areas around the lake which weren't...

    May hols help

Mono has mentioned the Eastern Algrave. We stayed at Robinsons Hotel in Quinta Da Ria. It lies between Cabanas and Fabrica in the Ria Formosa Natural Park east of Tavira. Cabanas is the nearest town. The hotel is excellent as was the birdwatching. We used to go to the Costa De La Luz in...

    Last bird of 2023

Two Green Sandpiper. They've been around for months, usually in the same location. Not there today but I found them in another area about a mile away, which is normally dry, but after all the heavy rain, it was badly flooded.

    Pied Wagtails Roosting

A roost of up to 70 Pied Wagtail used to be a common sight in the Kendal town centre trees- until the council chopped them down for no good reason. The trees were an important habitat for them. This is the same council which claims nature and the environment is important to them.

    Breeding Lapwing

Its been interesting to see how Lapwings have managed to breed this year. A local field is suitable for Lapwing but also used to for cattle grazing. It looks like someone had put temporary fencing around one area possibly to keep the cattle out. There were three chicks running around the other...

    Disturbed Lapwings make second nests.

The usual scenario; Lapwing settled down in local fields, were sitting on nests, then the farmers destroyed the nests, ploughing the fields and laying down those long sheets of plastic along the rows of planted seeds. The good news is six Lapwing have built new nests and they're now sitting on...

    Hodbarrow RSPB breeding success

Since erecting fox deterant fences and other actions there's been a remarkable increase in breeding birds at this reserve. In 2018 the RSPB had a record-breaking number of 1,950 pairs of Sandwich Terns at their Hodbarrow reserve near Millom. This is an increase from the previous record of 550...

Sad news from the Osprey team at Bassenthwaite, England

A real character. A regular observer noted he was a bit of a menace, always arriving too late to pair up, disturbing two nearby Osprey nesting sites, where pairs were already established. Including 2020, he returned to Cumbria every year. His wintering site was the Island of Bioko in Equitorial...
