    My New 12x50 Ultravids

I've not had any problems with my Ultravid since purchase in 2004, but have had problems with the PVC armour loosening on my Trinovids that needed to be replaced twice in ten years. I don't care for the "smell" of the rubber, but it works and has shown no sign of loosening.

    Poll:which binocular do you prefer?

I voted for the Ultravid 8X42 (which I own). I stepped up from the 8X32 BA (a very handy binocular) that I used for almost ten years. I think the 42 has an "easy" image, if that makes any sense. I did own a 10X42 BA that was a great glass, but it was a bit too much magnification for me...

    Nocturnal species

Falcon State Park and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. Both of these state parks are located in the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas near the Mexican border. These two areas should provide a lot of relative rarities. The Falcon guide "Birding Texas", if not already suggested, is excellent...

    Bino Experience

Len, Excellent observations, to each his (or her) own. A binocular is such a subjective item, I seldom make a specific recommendation although Leica has been my choice the last three times I purchased a binocular. You should be able to find tethered objective covers at Eagle Optics. JB

    Laws of physics vs perception

1.) All things being equal, the 40-42 objective should show more detail than the 30-32 objective. That's the physics part. Whether or not your eye can discern that detail is an unknown. I recently gave up my Leica 8X32 BA for the 8X Ultravid and have no regrets. I personally feel that the...

BVD keeps being "blind" on Leica

Swissboy, For a number of years, BVD was an independent source supported by "donations" from users. Originally a magazine of a few pages (I still have several issues), before it was web-based, I suspect that lack of capital was its' demise. Steven has been the contibutor for Birding magazine...

    Ultravid Dilemna

Bill, Ironically, I am in the process of replacing my 8X32 BA with an Ultravid. I used a 42 series BA for a couple of years and disliked the weight and bulk. I won't be going that route this time. What I wanted was a brighter image without a large increase in weight. I think the Ultravid...
