Thought this might be of general interest?

Sounds like this thread has the potential to drift into ‘What’s the rarest bird on your Garden List?’ Ken (relevant rarity committee accepted of course ;) )! In your location Little Auk would be one of the improbables but less so for a Portland Isle resident! Did he say whether the Ickys were...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Congratulations W, that is quite early for up there, I imagine you're not seeing many dragonflies yet! I've only ever had one Spring record here in 8 years, last May in fact. But I've seen two falcon sp this week, a male Peregrine the other day and a smart Kestrel seems to have taken up...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Hahaha. Ooh excellent, I hope to see an Osprey here one day, geese or gulls much less likely though! Snow here again overnight and frosty first thing, but it may be warming up tomorrow, hope so as I’ve run out of bird food to provide.

Med Gull, Red-billed Gull and Laughing Gull? The Vaud Audouin’s Gull had a brush with death yesterday when a Yellow-legged Gull nearly drowned it (photos on Ornitho.ch)!

Odd Wheatear on Paphos last week?

Plus Finsch’s always strike me as a chunky ‘bruiser’ of a wheatear sp, so Ken’s bird would appear to be a Pied ……

Sparrow Noise in Garden -help please :)

« I thought they were sparrows using a bird identification app » Well, whatever next, I thought crows were supposed to be our most intelligent birds but hats off to your spuggies ;) Yes, your recording confirms your suspicions, House Sparrow indeed. I think they’re noisiest at this time of...

    Birding halfway up the Alps

Winter is refusing to release its grip on us, 23 April and it’s snowing again, meaning some species that would normally be settling into their mountain summer residences are still stuck in the valleys. It was a milder than average winter, the local builder who comes and snowploughs the track...

Sunday playing Hide and Seek at Sionnet (GE) As my wife insisted on going down to Geneva to work despite being ill, I in turn insisted on being her chauffeur there and back last Sunday (21st April), giving me several hours to bird in the general area. After several days of snow showers, biting...

I was looking at the tail B, either a juv or a female type regrowing its tail after a feline encounter perhaps!

    Garden / Yard List 2024

All getting rather frustrating here with snow showers of varying intensity and very cold nights, -4C at dawn this morning. Had a fruitful walk to the village and back (except for the fact that the bakery was closed, my main objective was to buy bread…) with lots of Linnet and some Water Pipit...

Green Listing 2024 - Joint Thread

Nice one! Hard going here with the prolonged winter, so far this month I've added four to Europe and the World's's total : Red-billed Chough Wryneck Serin Rock Bunting I'm a bit of a Techno dinosaur so can someone explain to what the figures in Column A refer?

What Bird can you hear just now?

Another 30seconds’ listen at exactly 06h00 produced Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Black Redstart and Fieldfare (a couple of pairs nest near the house).

    Garden / Yard List 2024

'the wife'? Tut tut Frank, very old school ;) As we expect in April, the snow has melted fast in the sunny intervals, at least at our 1000m altitude, no frozen Wryneck discoveries thankfully. I've gone on (at length, I know!) about the value of steaming dung heaps when snow's on the ground, the...

Lovely stuff as always BM, here I’m not sure how yesterday’s Wryneck will manage in this morning’s conditions (see photo at 07h20)! Now where did I put away that snow shovel…..

    Birding and football

Anyway Andy, Stockport County's manager paid your lot quite a compliment in saying they'd completely changes their normal tactics to confront Notts County's free-flowing attacking style (apparently your team has a tendency to, er, over commit and leave themselves open to counter attack, hence...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

After a week in UK (breezy and wet Devon then breezy and sunny London) we've come home to snow showers and much cooler temperatures so I was very surprised to see a Wryneck late this afternoon as it crept around outside the kitchen window, successfully finding insects despite it being only 5C. I...

    Birding and football

Don't suppose you were at last night's goalfest then Andy? I was waiting for your congratulatory telegram ;) . I was at Edgeley Park when we won the old Div 4 in 1967 (with just 69 goals scored in the 46 matches, a lot of 1-0 victories that season I recall, a big difference to this year!). Hope...
