Eradicating Grey Squirrels - the natural way. Monbiot article

Oh dear... Pine Martens chow down on pheasant poults..... Somewhere in excess of 20,000,000 of those wretched non-native Sunday dinner birds are turfed out into the British countryside every year to compete with (and sometimes consume) the indigenous wildlife. Some get shot, many end up as car...

    Red Kites Fishing

Continental Black Kites are always at it. I once got so distracted watching these "Osprey wannabes" fishing from a swimming lake in the Auvergne that I took a refreshing dip with my remote control car key widget in my shorts pocket. Fortunately it proved as water resistant as the Kites...

peregrine decoy: will it scare birds away?

I doubt it if will do anything. I've seen a Peregrine and a Wood Pigeon perched in the same tree at Symonds Yat Rock more or less side by side within a metre of each other.

    Urban peregrines

In a city the size of Glasgow with all it's tall buildings, many of antiquity, I'd be highly surprised if there was only one pair of nesting Peregrines in the vicinity. Twenty years ago I'd have fallen about laughing if someone told me that most of the larger towns around me had resident...

    Eagles picking on baby/sibling?

And in good seasons when plenty of prey is being delivered to the nest the bigger eaglet feels less compelled to get rid of its competitors. The smaller sibling may, therefore, get to fledge successfully rather than get recycled.

    Drones to protect wildlife

I'm wondering if these should be patrolling the skies over the English uplands keeping an eye on the Hen Harriers http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/feb/07/wwf-wildlife-drones-illegal-trade and with the state of the breeding Hen Harrier population about three of these devices per pair...

Buzzard Persecution Trial to be sponsored by DEFRA

It's not a very well worded petition I'm afraid Jez. "The government withdraws its plans to spend £375,000 researching a buzzard cull". Benyon will simply say "My department has never researched a Buzzard cull, and has no plans to". Then it's game over for the petition. I've signed several...

    nothing changes

This does worry me. The RSPB's last campaign on raptor persecution didn't exactly get overwhelming support from its own membership. Just 10% of the membership signing the e-petition would make all the difference. It grieves me to say it but I sometimes wonder if the majority of the RSPB's...

    A Cure For Sparrows

In the interests of avoiding any misunderstandings with our American friends, Sparrowhawks have not eaten most of the British House Sparrow population. We still have plenty and they're increasing in some parts of the UK.

e-petition proposing vicarious liability for landowners

The government has finally seen through the wind-farm scam – but why did it take them

In a word - turbulence. Too many gusts and eddies from wind trying to get around buildings. No nice even laminar flow that you get on a hilltop. The stupid things would keep stopping and starting so would generate hardly enough power to charge-up one mobile phone a week.

Sparrowhawks responsible for House Sparrow decline says scientist

I don't know and, to be frank, you probably shouldn't. Predator/prey relationships are a vital part of a healthy functional eco-system. It may not look pretty but it's just nature. The more switched-on sparrows will live to pass on their genes another day. The less capable ones may not. It's...

    Cormorant Cull Petition

I'd say two situations give rise to a possible need for culling. An introduced species is posing a clear and present danger to indigenous species, or Absence of predators has led to a species becoming so populous that it is threatening habitat, wider biodiversity or its own wellbeing because of...
