    Avian misnomers

It occured to me the other day that many of our feathered friends have either misleading or inaccurate English names. I thought it might be fun to see how many the members can come up with. Please no duplication. I will start with one highlighted to me by my 8 year old grandson #1...

    Eagle, Mull, Sept.

Got a few quick shots of this eagle during its flyover at Bunessan, Isle of Mull last week. I reckon its a White-tailed Sea Eagle - we saw a number of these on the island but also saw a couple of Golden Eagles. This side-on view obscures the tail details so I just wanted to make sure it isn't a...

    confused pigeon?

For the past few days a Wood Pigeon has been visiting our garden and collecting sticks presumably for nest building. It gathers three of four nesting type sticks on each visit and then flies off to nearby trees. This is of course normal behaviour in spring but very late August? Has anyone else...

    Plover Thailand, January

Having noticed a recent thread about a Pale Plover at Parakang I wondered if this bird at the same location could also be a White-faced Plover. My initial id was a Lesser Sand but now i'm not so sure any help appreciated cheers alan

    barbet and breakfast

Thought members might be amused with this shot of a Coppersmith Barbet taken recently in Thailand. I only noticed the bird because it was making an unholy row in a nearby tree. When I downloaded the pics the reason for the loud calls became clear as a bug was clinging to its lower bill trying to...

    Brown Shrikes? Thailand. January

Saw a fair number of BS in the Khao Lak area recently but these three different individuals do not appear to have the white supercillum and seem to have a grey head. I assume they are BS as other shrikes apart from Tiger are out of range and the plumage does not look ok for Tiger. Comments...

Oriental Reed Warbler. Takua Pa. W Pen. Thailand

I think this must be an ORW as the only other similar RW on range is the Clamorous RW which I think is rare in Thailand. My only concern is that according to Robson, the ORW has white terminal edges to the tail which is not apparent on this bird. Pics taken near the Iron bridge at Takua Pa in...

Leaf Warblers, Khao Lak, Western Pen, Thailand

January. These warblers feeding high in a tree outside our hotel room every day of our 2 week stay. They were always high up and back-lit so photos are poor. I have cropped and lightened the shots. Arctic, Two-barred, Pale legged leaf, Eastern Crowned and Yellow-browed are all in range but I am...

    Bulbul, Si Phangnga NP, Thailand,

Poor shots of this bird in the forest of the NP last week. My best guess from my Robson guide is Grey-cheeked Bulbul but I am not too confident with this ID. The bird clearly has a raised crest and white puffed feathers in the throat area. GCB fits for range but so does the similar Ochraceous...

This Buzzard near Beaulieu in the New Forest this evening. It looks unusually pale to me. Is this a regular colour variation - or maybe just a juvenile bird cheers alan
