Always see red kites near harrogate

Yes, we always without fail see them between Leeds & Skipton when visiting OH's family. We're in a Red Kite area too (Reading). I love them :t:

A delicate subject... toilet facilities at reserves

Well- being also a 'lady of a certain age' (in fact, it's my 50th birthday today!) I do identify with the issue. Personally, I long since went past caring (probably years of fell walking as well as birding has made me more or less immune to what anyone else thinks) and will wee just about...

    Anyone from north west England

Could the bird be the resident Haweswater Golden Eagle, David? You're in the right corner of the Lakes in terms of location of the sighting.

    Aurora Borealis

Capercaillie, that's fantastic! I'm very envious... I have only seen the lights once, and that was near Kelso in the Borders. Just white flashes- nothing like your light show- but it still made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

    First signs of spring

First Chiffchaff heard on 24/2 this year. A record for my local patch too. Heard Skylarks singing when walking on the Downs yesterday, and a Woodpecker drumming. Also saw first bumblebees and first butterflies of the year.

Make up your own bird names

We had a similar thread a while back I think. I remember posting that I think Blackbirds should be renamed as Garden Ouzels. I love 'king of the fence' for Wren. That's so apt. :t:

    ID Help Needed

Although the bent neck and long beak don't fit, are you sure it wasn't a Red Kite? There are loads of them in our neck of the woods and they can look very dark in flight. Just a thought.

    Camouflage at its best

Excellent! Found it eventually. It's just like the 'spot the nightjar' game (see recent thread).

    Nightjar challenge

Only 8.46 seconds for me. It gets easier once you get your eye in though. Great fun!

    Swifts

Ours were still here on 7th August but had all gone by 11th (when I returned home after a few days away). I've been scanning for the past few days but haven't seen any since. The latest I have seen them locally was 24th August (a fairly large group making South). Edited to say: update- saw a...

    Non birders bless 'em

:-O Love it! Can't beat that one. Best I can offer is a story from some years back when my sister was living in Northern Ireland. A bird frequenting the area was known locally as the Conlig Eagle. Sadly, it was a Sparrowhawk.

Finally found a Ring Ouzel myself in the UK

I finally saw my first confirmed Ouzels (a breeding pair) last May on a fell in the Lakes having had nothing but fleeting 'might have been' moments for years prior to that. They are amazingly elusive.

Amateur frustration on Coniston Old Man

I agree. There's generally hordes of them on the Lakeland fells. BTW- I envy you! Last time I was on the Old Man there was horizontal sleet and it was blowing a howler.

    Forum too popular?

Oh yes, please, leave it as it is. It's the variety that makes it so interesting. Don't change a thing.

How exciting! I'm so looking forward to being there in a few weeks.

    Signs of spring?

The Swifts are back! The Swifts are back! Just saw a group fly over. Best moment of the Spring in my opinion :t: (edited to change Swallows to Swifts. I'm clearly over-excited...)
