How do you deal with house sparrows?

I keep just feeding the House Sparrows all winter long. I usually start out with close to thirty in the yard in the fall. The constant raids by Sharpie's and Cooper's cut the number down by a considerable amount. Feed the Sparrows = Feeding the Hawks. B (:

    Flock of geese

Few years back I saw a mixed formation of Canada Geese and a single male Mallard. If memory serves me right, the Mallard was in the middle of the formation, with Geese on either side. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture and haven't seen the like since. Were these birds flying together or was...

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

First night after a heavy frost, so the yard was very busy today. Visitors included house Sparrows, Juvenile White Crowned Sparrows, American Gold Finches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, a Common Grackle, Black Capped Chickadees, a Chipmunk and a baby rabbit. Not a bad day at all. B (:

That's interesting, I've never thought about doing that. What does cooking the cobs do? Is the corn cattle or is it fit for humans? Chris, B (:

    Jays eating maize

I've seen it several times by not only Blue Jays, but Red Winged Black Birds. Just recently I witnessed close to 60 Jays diving into a field that hadn't been harvested yet. The corn on the cob that I put out for the Jays is usually missing the first several rows when I put it on the feeder. It...

Possible Field Sparrow? - Whitby, Ontario Canada

Saw this bird in the backyard this morning. At first I thought it might be an American Tree Sparrow, but now I'm leaning towards a Field Sparrow because of the lighter upper mandible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris B (:

    Please HELP Apartment Dweller

Yes, no-mess seed will work in your situation. The draw back to no-mess, is the elevated cost. Another idea might be the use of a tray feeder. That will keep the birds from dropping any while they feed. The draw back of a tray feeder is that the wind might be able to blow the lighter seed off...

    American Goldfinch question

The AGF's do the same here, looking for the heaviest seed possible. The jays do the same thing with peanuts in the shell. Thank goodness for the ground feeders that clean up the seeds that don't make the grade. B (:

    Hand-Feeding!

I don't know what it is, but the Chickadees seem to be the friendliest little birds around. After I took the picture of the Black cap to the left, he hopped up onto the top of my phone. We looked at each other, then he flew off to hide the piece of peanut for later. It was quite the...

    Denver, CO Gray Bird

Could it be some type of juvenile Grackle, Common or Great tailed. I'm not sure which are more common in your area. Depending on the lighting conditions it could be causing the brown to appear grayish. I know the ones I see around here can hold the tail so it looks like a v. And whenever I...
