    Common Buzzard (Worthing, Sx, UK)

This isn’t my picture, so I couldn’t see the bird for myself, but is this a common buzzard, or a honey buzzard as someone else I know claims?

    Recent problem with walking boots

Thanks for the replies. For the record, I'm 40 and in generally good health. I've not noticed any changes in other footwear I have, but I have wondered whether there's been some change physically that the boot seems to accentuate. I shall give the insoles a go, see if that works. Regards

    Recent problem with walking boots

Hi I've recently been experiencing pain in one of my feet when I go walking while wearing my walking boots. They're a reputable make (Meindl) bought from a reputable independent retailer and for ages I had no problem at all, they were perfect. But for some reason recently an area on the sole...

Kite-type bird of prey, Qld, Australia

Hi A friend has taken this photo of a bird of prey in Southern Queensland. Looks like a type of kite to me but could someone ID it please? Thanks

    What are wasps for?

Clearly people are either reading too much into what I'm asserting, or more likely I simply haven't phrased the question correctly. James' wording "when feeding on fermented fruit do wasps benefit/impact on other species within the ecosystem?" is much much better and sums up exactly what I...

    What are wasps for?

True - not disputing that. But many/most species sit within an ecosystem and their existence within it often serves a function (for wont of a better term), helping particular plants to pollenate, or helping to limit the numbers of other species for example. My query is related to that more...

    What are wasps for?

Something that I've often heard over the years, especially from older relatives, is that wasps don't serve a purpose, especially later on in the summer when they're often just feeding on fruit and are pests when you're trying to eat outside. This has always struck me as nonsense, but I've never...

Flower ID please (Hove, Sussex, UK)

Hiya I've seen a lot of these wild flowers around growing out of people's garden walls. Would anyone be able to ID it please? Thanks

    Springwatch 2013

That's how things are usually done in the wildlife filming game. It can take hours to get some usuable footage and there's no point having a presenter (they're presenters after all, not cameramen or soundmen or some other technician) sitting around twiddling their thumbs with nothing to do when...

    Unprecedented movement of Jays?

Considering the lack of acorns this year and the influx of Jays into the country, does that mean Jay populations will decrease significantly this winter?

    What besides birds?

My bins often accompany me to the cricket and horse racing. Also handy for looking up at tall buildings for those of us interested in architecture.

Swifts gone, Winters on its way again.

The sound of summer gone already. Shame they are late arrivers and early leavers to/from these shores. Being located on the south coast I get to see and hear them longest - at the moment I've noticed big groups of swifts flying together high up (talking groups of 30+ birds) in the evenings, I...

    The Guardian: Chris Packham

Until fairly recently I thought that the TV licence was rare outside the UK, but it's actually quite common. And many European countries charge more than we do in the UK - Switzerland's fee is currently 385 euros for example (the Nordic countries and Germany generally higher than the UK's -...

What Bird would be your county bird?

To be fair CB, many people in Sussex aren't aware that's what the birds on the flag and arms are called, despite a number of businesses and institutions in the county having Martlet in their name. http://www.sussexflag.webs.com/sussexemblem.htm Regards

    The Guardian: Chris Packham

Well said James - nowt wrong with people cutting their presenting teeth in children's tv in general. Certainly didn't do Jeremy Irons any harm! Or Dara O'Briain (on Irish tv). Plus plenty others (Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan included).

What Bird would be your county bird?

They're not swallows, but martlets on the Sussex flag and arms - the martlet is a heraldic bird based on (depending what you read) the swift or the swallow.

    The Guardian: Chris Packham

Living in the BBC South region I used to see him sometimes presenting Inside Out and as the article mentions, it allowed him to mature in front of camera and to gain good experience, having to deal with subject matters that he might not have been so au fait with. This latest series of his...

Agreed - very boring. Almost as bad as England trying to find the next Ian Botham (or is it the new Andrew Flintoff now?).

What Bird would be your county bird?

Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier - talking of flags (and by extension arms) and Sussex, shouldn't our county bird be the martlet?

What Bird would be your county bird?

Wiltshire's flag has a Bustard on it My vote for Sussex is for the nightingale rather than Pom Skua, but that's only because I've never seen the latter!
