Sparrowhawk age - London UK (1 Viewer)

ChrisKten

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
At this time of year, the juvenile Sparrowhawks turn up in my garden, and I've seen two already this week. This from yesterday, was the third, but it's not, is it?

I was sure it was a juve until I looked at my pics carefully; there's no heart-shaped breast patterning, so it can't be a juve. I know the patterning is a bit less pronounced on juve males, but I can't see it at all.

So, allowing for the time of year, I'd guess this was a 2nd year female. Anyway, I've changed my mind once already, so I thought I'd better confirm it.

Thanks.

Yes, I think you're right too Chris. The second shot including the upper parts very neatly shows a mixture of retained buff-tipped brown juvenile coverts and the next generation of darker feathers. Nice shots, as usual!
Cheers,
Brian
