    I agree, I test it a few times a week on average and it rarely gets anything wrong (herring vs yl gull still an issue ;-)) but the old problems of chaffinch vs redstart call etc seem to have been ironed out

    If I actively kept lists (even my patch list is behind times nowadays) I would chose 1. I'd never really thought about not counting heard only, when carrying out surveys I'd say 95% of the birds I record on BBS are heard only so have always seen it as equal to seeing the bird. I get far more...

    With regards to binoculars and cameras etc I have a bit of advice, I worked in Egypt a few years ago and some of my colleagues had their optics confiscated while I was lucky and didn't. What we found was if you dressed like a tourist (I was wearing board shorts and flip flops) they didn't check...

    Only the one addition this past couple of weeks: 42) grey wagtail Nocmig has started picking up and if I wasn't so lazy and just stayed awake in the garden all night I could have added: i) moorhen ii) Canada goose iii) avocet iv) teal v) little grebe

    Ones on land have the street/road/area name first. The ones with just coordinates are at sea records so won’t have these but will have the country/sea it’s located in as part of the location

    I think I'm a few weeks behind with this, not that there is much to catch up with tbh! All flyovers: 38. Lapwing 39. Feral pigeon 40. Peregrine 41 Skylark Spring is in the air here so hopefully pick up a few more soon.

    Dozens down here in SW Cornwall, 1 or 2 daily in my garden and easily see 10+ on my patch (when its not torrential rain!)

    What was your best found “patch bird”this year?

    It’s been a good year on patch, finding red-throated pipit was probably best, melodious warbler, 3 Serin, 3 Richards pipits, 2 bee-eaters, Kumulien’s gull, night heron and golden oriole other highlights. Seawatching also good from patch, finding 10+ Wilson’s, 2 feas, barolo, scopoli’s etc. Also...

    I think the poll here is pointless tbh, until I saw this thread I thought most people were in favour. I’ve probably spoken to about 30 friends in the UK and US and all were in favour of the changes, so any poll is biased to the audience I suppose (I’d imagine my poll had a far younger average...

    I agree with your Balkan leaf warbler point but I don't think I've ever heard anyone in the field call a Hume's, a Hume's YBW for at least 10 years
