What you can see of head and neck in images 6 and 7 still suggestive of Honey to my eyes, but overall on these images alone I think you end up with "buzzard-sized bird".

    Raptor ID (Britain)

Agree 2nd and 3rd images very suggestive of Honey-buzzard. The 2nd even hints at that strange habit Honeys have of extending the neck and holding the head up or sideways.

    Picture Editing Thoughts

Have to say I prefer the original! It looks more 'natural' than the edited version which to my eyes is a touch too contrasty and colourful. But you might want to discount that because I'm not an expert image editor and my PC screen is not calibrated.

Bird of prey - Gstaad, Switzerland - yesterday

Nice! Just wanted to note that it's definitely worth looking at the video linked in post #1.

Very nice photo by the way!

Alpine Accentor, Prunella collaris. Nice bird!

Raptor, Black Forest, Southern Germany 21.09.2023

The head and bill shape (quite rounded and fine) do not look right for Goshawk to me, better for Honey. The flight behaviour described could fit either but I'd say more typical of Honey Buzzard which seem able to move bouyantly but almost invisibly low across the ground. Don't know what it is.

BOP identification in the French pyrenees.

The first image gave me a strong impression of Lammergeier, but the other images less so!

Liguria, Italy, Oct 22 long shot

Not identifiable on the image alone (!), but there's a fair chance it was a Griffon Vulture <Gyps fulvus>. There are some in the Maritime Alps after a reintroduction project and I have seen individuals probably dispersing from there in the north Apennines. But that of course is not an ID for...

Sparrowhawk or Goshawk? Seen above Bagneres de Bigorre in the French pyrenees

Goshawk indeed! Those long wings with broad secondaries and narrow hand very typical. Don't know how true this is for everywhere but they can be very hard to see even when you know they are there! They keep under the canopy for much of the time. Ears can be better than eyes when trying to track...

    Raptor, Doğubeyazıt Turkey

Looks like Golden Eagle to me. Barring on wings broad, well-spaced, a little erratic/obscure in places, barring in Steppe typically finer (more and narrower bars) and regular. Carpal patches not well-defined as in many Steppe. Wing shape and tail proportion good for GE.

Raptor - French Pyrenees, August 2019

Yes, exclusively so (although there's an ancient and rather dubious report of one catching prey on wing), largely excavating comb from wasp nests, or frogs from puddles, but I've seen them wandering about in eg. cut hayfields looking for big fat grubs. Used to be video clip of one doing just...

Raptor - French Pyrenees, August 2019

I'm very rusty but this looks a lot more like Pernis than Aquila to me too. But troubled by faint goldish tint on back of neck in 3rd image - but possibly just reflection, and bill looking slightly more robust than typical Honey Buzz - but possibly just haze and unsharpness. But, the hillside...

    Whip-poor-will or Chuck-will's-widow? S. Florida

Nothing to contribute on ID, but they are excellent nightjar images!

    Goshawk? Cottbus, Germany (recording)

It's been a couple of years since I heard Goshawk but to my ageing ears this sounds more like a 'sound-alike'. Perhaps one of those mentioned above. Seems to lack the depth and power expected from Gos. But I'm certainly out of practice!

    Kestrel breeding season 2021

Thanks for posting! Really interesting compilation. Just debating with myself if I would replace one of the stolen chicks and a hand appeared replacing a chick. Two fledged - not so bad.

I'd go for one of the resident accipiters also, but which? Plausibly Gos but the trunk perhaps not bulky enough. If you had a few seconds video...!

Thanks jurek, looks good for Tawny. More variation than I had realised!

Which owl owned this feather? N Appenines, Italy

Found on a wooded mountain track today. Have no references to hand and wonder if anyone can put a name to this? Total length, c 16 cms, width 4.5 cms. Guess Asio otus would be prime suspect, or conceivably Bubo? Thanks for any help.

    Goshawks

Interesting thread! I have spent many many hours over several years observing around a Goshawk site in wooded hills in north Italy. If breeding, the male can be seen regularly but I have very rarely seen the female! Mostly they keep within the woodland and its has always been snowing or foggy...

Possible Golden Eagle, Oakville, Ontario, 5th May 2021

Not a harrier either, I think, has a distinct Buteo look I'd say, but can't go further!

    Goshawk or Sparrowhawk? Düsseldorf Germany

I think one of the most informative features in these images is the heavy-looking body of the Goshawk, wide and deep across the breast and wide across the hips; the faded barring on the wings is also typical in contrast to distinct barring in Spar. There are other features...
