Terelj NP and Hustai are great for first timers (with great wild flowers, butterflies and mammals too). There are also some sites very close to UB as well. (have seen Azure and white-crowned Penduline Tits within UB city limits (along the Tuul river - easy walking from the Winter Palace of the...

    Parrot sp - Guyana

Thank you KGS - I think you are probably right. I had discounted it originally because it wasn't in my notes for the day and this bird looked much paler than I'd remembered brown-throated being (and different from my other shots of brown-throated) but I can't see that it can be anything else!

    Parrot sp - Guyana

Working through my photos from a trip last November I came across this one. The image doesn't match any of the species in my notes and I can't find anything similar in the Field Guides. Can anyone help? Could it be a juvenile / immature and so look somewhat different from the guide...

    Raptor Guyana

Thank you, now that your ID has reminded me that the third option was indeed black hawk eagle (and not great black hawk as I mis-remembered) I can look up the right bird. Thanks again for the rapid response

    Raptor Guyana

I'd be interested to know what the forum thinks of this raptor please. Seen at the Abary mangrove trail near Georgetown in November. It was called first as a juvenile zone-tailed hawk, on viewing the back of the camera shots that was amended to probable long-winged harrier but another opinion...

    Borneo jungle birding

I was in Danum Valley in February, staying at the Rainforest lodge, and left my scope (a little Nikon ED50) in my room after the first walk. That's not to say that on occasions it wouldn't have been useful - for birds seen at the tops of trees from the main track to the lodge - but on the trails...

Complete Long shot - Papua New Guinea seabird

Thanks for the input guys. For the time of year Brown noddy fits distribution-wise, so will go with that as a working hypothesis, and do a bit more learning to try and get to the same understanding you have! I was visiting friends doing VSO out there, had never done any foreign birding and field...

Complete Long shot - Papua New Guinea seabird

This is probably an impossible ask but having just had some ancient slides converted to jpeg of a (non-birding, ouch) trip to PNG some 20+ years ago I came across these shots, taken from a small boat off the southern coast of West New Britain. The visit was in March/April. There were definitely...

    Need recommendations for mosquito repellent

Hate the smell of DEET and what it does to clothes and plastics, so have been using Incognito on recent trips - it seems to work. It does have a tendency to 'wash-off' in very high humidity but I think there is now a gel as well as the spray. Also has shower gel and shampoo for total cover. I...

Stupid weekend trip to Tenerife, Canary Islands 26 - 27th July 2014

For the Caribbean - what about the Blue Waters Inn on Tobago, can be B&B, half board or what they call Full American Plan, so not quite all inclusive (as drinks not included). You can book direct or several companies do packages I think. Similarly to the Aruba Hotel it's in a great location...

Hi Chowchilla some of the responses to this thread might be useful, especially for the areas around Hobart http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=213775 (although I've just spotted that you responded to the thread so have probably checked it out already) Inverawe gardens is easily...

Gambia - hotel with good grounds

Sorry Mark I guess you can probably tell that essentially everyone loves the Gambia and wants to recommend their favourite bit! Whatever you choose you will love it! Roberta

Gambia - hotel with good grounds

Pratincol I really don't want to get into a fight with you over this but would prefer to be correctly quoted! I did not say anything about all the money - your emphasis - going abroad, I only mentioned the profits. And I quite agree that we should check the ownership of where we stay, and I do...

Gambia - hotel with good grounds

Hi Pratincol Actually I'm not an AI basher - I have stayed AI in the past but now if I went AI I would prefer it to be where the hotels were both owned as well as staffed by Nationals and where the profits stay in country and don't go to huge multinationals. Everything you say about the...

Gambia - hotel with good grounds

Hi Mark I haven't stayed there but the Bakuto Hotel at Kotu has a good rep for birding (it's where Chris Packham always stays apparently!) as well as being suitable for non-birding companions. It's also possible to get a reasonably priced package to the Bakotu (Thomas Cook, Gambia Experience)...

    Guyana November-December 2014

Ever fancied a trip to Guyana? I have my name down for a 16/17 day trip to Guyana later this year. However, for reasons incomprehensible to me, it has not reached its minimum number - last year's was over subscribed and I missed out! It is a guided tour, but some of us lone travellers need that...

Thomas Cook hand Luggage allowance - for The Gambia

Hi Steve The only time I have had hand luggage weighed was by Monarch, on my way to The Gambia. No single item was as heavy as your lens but I had to move stuff into my checked bag, just managed to keep the optics/cameras with me. Is it possible to contact Thomas Cook in advance, there must...

    Trinidad & Tobago 2-16 April 2014

Thanks Rob, much easier! Your report brought back memories of a trip to Tobago over 10 years ago. It wasn't a birding holiday as such but I too did a day out with Newton George - it was my first experience of a full on birding day with a guide. A memorable experience. Looking forward to part...

Would love to read this Rob but it doesn't seem be a word file but something with a .php extension - can't open it on my pc. Can you re-attach as an ordinary word file - or copy and paste the report into an ordinary post? Thanks Roberta

    Drying off

This cormorant was very close to a footpath at the water's edge, clearly getting his feathers back in condition was of more concern than my presence!
