Newton Stewart, Scotland. South American species?

Actually there has! A well photographed bird on Scilly from October 1986 was thought to be Bicknell's but in the end I think a well marked Grey-cheeked couldn't be ruled out

Filthy twitchers - which birds do you regret NOT going for?

I had just come off Scilly and was in the Safeway car park in Penzance looking at Rosy Starling. A birder came up and told me about the warbler so I headed straight to Prawle - driving past my house on the way! I met Mike Langman and Mush by the phone box in Prawle village to ask for the latest...

    Chiffchaff ? Corsica

Surely it's a Western Bonelli's. I assume they must pass through Corsica on migration.

    Warbler? Northern Thailand

Nice full supercilium from bill to neck - broader in front of the eye, and is that a pale base to the upper mandible?. It's also quite bull-necked and "heavy footed" Looking like Radde's Warbler to me.

    Pocket Bird Book

The Collins Guide is indeed the very best Field Guide available, but for a beginner it is daunting and as Chris has already mentioned it covers species you would never see on the IOM. I still recommend The Pocket Guide to the Birds of Britain and North-West Europe by Chris Keightley and Steve...

    Cirl Bunting ?

The rump is rusty which rules out Cirl Bunting. This is a Yellowhammer. I don't think Cirl Bunting occurs in Ukraine. Darrell

    Gull I.D. Chew Valley UK.

Black-headed Gull for me too. The legs look rather dark, but the clincher for me is the pure white nape, if this was a Bonaparte's it would be grey - showing even in this strong light.

How to differentiate yellow and grey wagtail

leg colour is diagnostic- pink in Grey Wagtail and black in Yellow. There are obvious plumage and structural differences but you'll not go wrong if you just check the legs Darrell

    County listing question

Dave, Although Plymouth and Torbay are unitary authorities as far as running their own affairs goes they are still part of the county of Devon. A similar situation exists in Yorkshire with Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield et al. Having said that, defining county boundaries can be a right royal pain...

Marsh tit vs Willow tit: Am I right?

But now we are aware of the bill spot surely that gives us two definitive ID criteria - along with the voice. We can't use calls to identify birds from photographs but we can use the bill spot, in which case it is more than "handy" it is the primary identification feature and to dismiss it as a...

    Chiffchaff/Iberian Chiffchaff/Willow Warbler‏ Portugal

Isn't one of the features of Iberian Chiff that the supercilium meets over the bill? From what I can see of the OPs bird that is not the case. I too lean towards Willow Warbler. Here is a photo I took a couple of years ago illustrating the point Darrell
