    Got a 300mm f2.8...........what next 5 or 600mm

If you can afford the 600 & upgrade in tripod etc & can cope with the extra weight, go for it. Its easier to back off from your subject than it is to get closer. I often use mine with a 2x tc to give 1200mm f8.

    D800e or D4

Save the extra & go for the D4. Everything you could ever want in a wildlife camera. I have not suffered with lack of reach by going fx.

    Tripod Head...

I have a 393 that i use on my monopod & car window mount. I have removed the 357 plate clamp & put a 4" arca-swiss type clamp on it. I found them far better made & robust & would defy anyone to remove the plate without undoing it first. I feel far happier with it on there than i did with...

    D800e

The 400 f2.8 is nearly as big & heavy as the 600 f4. You will need decent support for it as well.

    Tripod & Head Advice

Most heads have a standard thread either 1/4 or 3/8 BSW. The legs will have one or the other & you can get an adaptor to convert one to the other. So in short, yes it will be! Cheers Rob

    Nikkor 600mm AFS II

I have the VR version of this lens & also think that the vr slows up the af. Keep the shutter speed up & you wont miss it.

    Tripod & Head Advice

Hi, I wasn't refering to being able to get to the zoom or focus rings. What i meant was that by zooming in & out, you are changing the lenses center of balance because the lens gets longer or shorter as you do so. This would upset the balance of the gimbal. The Nikkor 200-400 or Sigma 300-800...

    Tripod & Head Advice

A gimbal head would be a pain in the neck to use with a zoom lens. They are designed for heavy primes & need to be set up to balance properly. A zoom lens would continually need adjusting to get the balance correct while zooming in & out (internal zooms such as the sigma 800 or nikkor 200-400...

Raw all the time. No point getting a superb shot & then throwing half the information away by saving as a jpeg.

    Quick release head for Monopod

They are just as good, but they are not compatable with each other. All the arca-swiss clamps plates & feet should fit each other, giving a much bigger choice. Rob

    500/4 or 600/4?

Go for a 600. You wont regret it. Sure its heavier, but the extra reach makes up for it. Dont forget you will need a substantial tripod & head to support it.

    Wimberley Gimbal

I would tend to agree with Steve re the center column & 3/8 screw. As for the legs, i read somewhere that they are suitable for lenses up to 300mm f2.8. May be ok for the short term untill you can upgrade to a heavier duty set.

Where to go from here ?

The D50 is compatible with both af-s & screw drive lenses. Nikon didnt lose the plot untill the D40!

How much memory is suitable for raw

I also favour more smaller cards for the same reason Steve mentions. I usually bank on a max of 200 images per card, in my case on my D2x, 4GB. Regards Rob

    Quick release head for Monopod

Arca-swiss in this context is basically a type of QR plate & clamp. It is the professionals choice & is very "safe". There are various companys that make arca-swiss type plates & clamps. All are interchangeable so a wimberley plate will fit a kirk clamp for example. Some companys that make them...

checklist for my first tripod purchase

If i need to get that close to the ground i use a beanbag instead! I think you will find most tripods go low enough for 90% of shots. Most of the cheaper tripods will have a center coloumn, some can be split so the legs can go lower & the more expensive makes such as Gitzo have the option of a...

Swarovski scopes and Manfrotto tripod heads

checklist for my first tripod purchase

The flip locks are quite common these days, just look at Manfrotto (Bogen). I would not agree with the horizontal column as most tripods have legs that spread so that the camera is almost on the deck. I personally dont like center columns at all because they cant be as rigid as mounting the head...
