    Swarovski ATS 65 & ATS 80

I have been asked by A Bird Forum member to send some photos of equipment that I want to sell and that he's interested in. I don't have his email - how do I go about sending him this information? Help Please. Thanks Robin

    Top birders use which binoculars?

I'd like to know which binoculars the elite birders prefer. Don't be shy if you think you qualify as an 'elite birder' or if you prefer the term top experienced birder, which bins would you pick up as you prepare to set off somewhere special.

    Birders and photographers

Returned to Cley for two weeks annual holiday after a year's absence. Immediately noticed the change in the profile and behaviour of those in the Cley Reserve hides. There were far fewer birders with scopes and bins and far more photographers with large lenses covered with camouflage...

    Zeiss ClassiC 7x42 Bgat

How many birders who own these fine instruments use them as their primary birding binoculars. I feel sure that many birders who are lucky enough to own a pair would never dream of selling them, but are they still used regularly? I know that I do, despite having Leica and Swarovski alternatives...

    Gitzo 2180 fluid head

I recently purchased the Gitzo 2180 head, using it with a Manfrotto 055CX3V CF tripod and a Swarowski 80 ATM scope. I have been delighted with the results so far, but I have read some critical comments on the internet, that the head is not robust enough to produce steady images using this...

    Manfrotto head

I prefer using a hide clamp to a Tripod. They are so much easier to handle, but sometimes there is no alternative but to use a tripod when there are no hides around. I have a Manfrotto 055cx3 with a 701RC2 fluid head. I find that the length of the arm makes it difficult to get close to the...

    Heathfield East Sussex

I am staying in Heathfield East Sussex helping to look after my very elderly Mother in Law. I am a male aged 68 and a keen birder only recently coming back to the hobby. I am looking for a car driving companion to explore the many good birding places in East Sussex and the surrounding area...

    Gitzo launches new Safari range

Hi, Looks interesting if expensive; anyone any experience of this new setup? I'm looking for a lightweight tripod and fluid head.

shrinkage of the vitreous humour in the eye

Apparently in older people this is quite a normal occurrence. In time, the liquefied vitreous body in the eye loses support and its framework contracts. This leads to posterior vitreous detachment, in which the vitreous body is released from the sensory retina. It manifests itself in...

    Hide clamps

Has anyone an opinion on, or experience with, 1) The Velbon Delta hide clamp or 2) The Opticron BC -2 hide clamp (the sturdier one)? I'm particularly interested in the ease of using the head with a 80mm scope. They are both similarly priced and weight difference is negligible.

    Blackcap or Garden Warbler

Has anyone any tips on distinguishing Blackcap from Garden Warbler, when you can hear a bird singing but it remains invisible? General tips on aural Jizz would be really helpful. Thanks Robin

    Rucksack for Swaro 80mm scope

Anyone used the Lowepro Flipside 400 Backpack for carrying a large scope, eyepiece, bins and hide clamp. I know it's designed for DSLR cameras, but it looks as if it might do for scope, Bins and hide clamp.

    Reed or Sedge Warbler?

Any tips on identifying by sound alone whether hidden bird is Reed or Sedge Warbler? Their reeling/chattering song sounds very similar. Also quick sighting of possible Whitethroat or Lesser Whitethroat; any clues from Jizz if only seen for split second?

    Case for Swaro EL 8x32

Any ideas for an alternative to the Swarovski case provided for the EL 8x32? As someone said, 'it looks as if it were designed as hand luggage', and should have had a retractable handle fitted for wheeling around in the field. Something less bulky but still reasonably protective would be ideal...

    Swaro WA 30 mag eyepiece

Anyone any experience of using this eyepiece with an ATM scope? I would very interested to hear of the pros and cons of using the 30 WA mag compared to either of the current Swaro zoom lenses.

    Carrying Case for Swarovski scope

I would welcome any advice on the best way to carry a swarovski 80mm scope. I use a rucksack to carry my hide clamp, bins, water and notebook etc. Although I have sufficient space in the rucksac to accommodate my scope too, I find the weight unmanageable and would prefer to distribute the...

    RSPB Hide clamp (R402314)

Has anyone experience of the RSPB hide clamp? I saw it in the Titchwell RSPB shop at the weekend. It looks lighter (and is slightly cheaper) than the similar Velbon clamp, but may not be sufficiently robust to support a Swarovski 80m Scope and keep it steady. I had not visited the Parrinder...

    Swarovski EL 8x32

I have heard from a reliable optics dealer in London who has the 'ear' of Swarovski, that the current batch of EL 8x32 WB bins are in fact the unannounced and unheralded new SV version. The evidence for this is the new design carrying case, the lack of Swaroclean information on the box, and...

Birds of the Western Palearctic interactive

Has anyone opinions about this set? It was on offer from Birdguides at a reduced price of £99.00 for twenty four hours only a couple of days ago. I want to install the contents on my hard disk rather than access it via the DVD. Is this the best method of using it?

    SOC for Swarovski ATM 80

Has anyone any experience of an alternative SOC to the one provided by Swarovski at £150.00. I see that Ace Cameras have their own brand alternative for £80.00 - has anyone used it, got one?

    Leica Ultravid 7x42 HD

Returning to birding after about twelve years I bought some new binoculars. My last pair was 8x32 BA Leica trinovid which I had used and was very happy with, so I was accustomed to the size and weight and qualities associated with the smaller binocular. So with very little thought I purchased a...

Manfrotto Tripod and head for new scope

I intend to buy a new scope shortly - Swarovski ATM 80 angled scope. I would like to buy either a 701RC2 or a 128RC Manfrotto head and a Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod. The central column of the tripod has to convert to a hide clamp with the addition of a Manfrotto clamp. I will use the scope...

    Optics Obsessions

Equipment and birds As a birder said to me recently when I asked his advise on choosing a new scope, 'I don't do equipment, I only do birds.' Well I think that I detect in these pages an underground subculture of people whose first love is not to birds at all. Their shameful vice, their secret...

    New member

Hi and hello to all Birdforum Members, I have returned to birding after a gap of twelve years. I am retired and live in London and have recently joined The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust. Their nearest site is in Barnes which is quite easy for me to visit. I am hoping to buy a top end scope in...
