Goldeneyes (Puget Sound, US, Dec. 26, 2023)

Happy New Year! I think these three birds which I took pictures of on December 26, 2023 at a beach in the Puget Sound are a pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes (in front), with a trailing Common Goldeneye hen. Am I right? Thanks, Howard

Please tell me this is a Great Crested Grebe (Milton Keynes, UK, Nov. 26, 2023)

Hi, I took this picture a couple of days ago (November 26, 2023) in Milton Keynes during my quick family trip to London. It is likely my only new birds of the trip -- that is, if it is a Great Crested Grebe in winter plumage. The other bird in the picture is a Black-headed Gull in winter...

Northern Virginia sparrow (October 12, 2023)

Hi, I took this picture today in Fairfax County, Virginia. My initial jizz was a Clay-colored Sparrow, but now I have doubts. In particular, I don't like the dark line in front of its eye, so I think it may be an immature Chipping Sparrow. What do you think? Thanks in advance. Howard

Warblers, Northern Virginia, US (October 1, 2023)

Hi, I took these in Norther Virginia -- lousy picture, which is why I am asking here. My guesses -- 1. The angle is awkward, but I think I can see white wing bars and a black eye line and some rusty wash on the flanks -- Bay-breasted Warbler? 2. A bit stumped, prominent wing bars, and overall...

Franklin's or Laughing Gull? (Maryland, US, September 16, 2023)

Hi, I took these pictures on September 16, 2023 at Sandy Point State Park in Maryland, US. There has been a Franklin's Gull at this location for some time. When I was there, I was distracted by a Laughing Gull that is apparently smaller than others. That one was later confirmed to be just a...

Hi, surely this is a European Pied Flycatcher? Thanks, Howard

Greater Whitethroat? Helsinki, June 12, 2023

Hi, I took these pictures on Suomenlinna Island in Helsinki on June 12, 2023. These are two different individual birds. I marked them as Greater Whitethraot. Would I be right? Thanks, Howard

Catharus thrush (northern Virginia, May 15, 2023)

Hi, I took picture of this Catharus thrush in northern Virginia today. I suppose it is a Swainson's which is pretty much expected during migration at this location. But I don't see the "buffy eye-ring"; in fact, I always had trouble to discern that in a Swainson's Thrush. But the strong...

Possible Cackling Goose? (Northern Virginia, Feb. 11, 2023)

Hi, There were recent confirmed sightings of a Cackling Goose at this location (Fairfax County, Virginia) and I spotted a potential. To be sure, even if it is, it would be the "Richardson's" subspecies, which is, I believe, the largest subspecies of the Cackling Goose and it is pretty...

Puerto Rico birds (November 20-24, 2022)

Hi, I took these pictures during my short Thanksgiving trip to Puerto Rico. Most were taken near San Juan, except for 4 which was taken near Fajardo. I have some ideas, but any confirmation would be appreciated: 1. Surely Greater Antillean Grackle? (would be new) 2. Surely Zenaida Dove...

Warbler, Northern Virginia (Oct. 16, 2022)

Hi, I saw this small warbler today (October 16, 2022) in Northern Virginia today. My initial jizz was a Tennessee, but now I have some doubts -- it is almost devoid of any marking -- no wing bars, eyerings, etc. Maybe an immature Common Yellowthroat instead? Thanks in advance, Howard

Empid flycatcher, Northern Virginia, October 6, 2022

Hi, I took this picture yesterday (October 6, 2022) in Northern Virginia. It is near the location where I saw this one (Empid flycatcher, Northern Virginia, September 19, 2022) which was confirmed as Least Flycatcher. But this appears to be a different individual (a little more bedraggled) and...

Northern Virginia wren (September 24, 2022)

Hi, I took this picture today (September 24, 2022) in northern Virginia (Fairfax County) today. Initial impression was a Winter Wren for the stubby tail. But now I have some doubts -- maybe it's the angle that makes the tail look short? Is it a House Wren instead? Thanks in advance, Howard

Empid flycatcher, Northern Virginia, September 19, 2022

Hi, I took pictures of this small flycatcher in northern Virginia today (September 19, 2022). Initially I marked it as a Least Flycatcher (prominent eye-ring, two white(ish) wing bars, short primary projection). However, someone also proposed "worn plumage adult yellow-bellied". It did not...

Surely Eurasian Blackbird? (Athens, June 10, 2022)

Hi, I saw this bird in Athens on June 10, 2022. My thought is a young Eurasian Blackbird. What do you think? Thanks in advance, Howard

Raptor in Crete, Greece, 9 June, 2022

Hi, I saw and photographed this raptor in the mountains of the Akrotiri Peninsula (near Chania) in Crete, Greece on the said date. It was very far and these were the best pictures I got (already 100% crops). It certainly has a buteo shape. So might it be the buteo (Buteo buteo, i.e. Common...

Passerine bird, Lindos, Greece, 31 May, 2022

Hi, I took this picture just below the acropolis in Lindos, Rhodes Island on 31th May, 2022. The birds were darting in the conifer trees, and unfortunately this is the only picture I got. Is it possible to ID it from this angle? Thanks in advance, Howard

Small blue bird in Crete, Greece, 9 June, 2022

Hi, I saw this little bird in the Akrotiri Peninsula (near Chania) in Crete, Greece. My thinking is Blue Rock-thrush. Am I right? Thanks, Howard

Falcon, Lindos, Rhodes, Greece, 31 May 2022

Hi, I took this pictures in the said location at the said time; there were a few of them in the area, actually, probably nesting on the cliffs by the sea. Common (Eurasian) Kestrel? Thanks in advance, Howard

Really, really long shot (Tucson, AZ, March 18, 2022)

Hi, I know this is a really, really long shot and I may just have to write it off. I took this picture at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson, AZ on March 18, 2022. At the time the impression was a warbler, but even that I am not sure anymore. The bird was skulking and disappeared into the brambles...

Hummingbird, Anza-Borrego Desert, California, US, March 18, 2022

Hi, I took picture of this hummingbird (female? Immature?) at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California on March 18, 2022. My thinking is Black-chinned for the white outer tail feather tips. What do you think? Thanks in advance, Howard

Rock Wren (Sedona, AZ, USA, March 22, 2022)

Hi, I took pictures of this little guy while hiking on the morning of March 22, 2022 in Sedona, Arizona. Surely a Rock Wren (clear eye-brow so not House Wren; no clean white breast so not Canyon Wren)? Thanks in advance, Howard

A few long-shot birds (California, Arizona, US; March, 2022)

Hi Here are a few fuzzy pictures that I am not too sure of 1. sparrow -- March 14, 2022, Antelope Valley (south-central California) -- which one? 2. sparrow -- March 22, 2022, Green Valley, Arizona -- maybe Rufous-winged? 3. March 25, 2022, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona -- out...

Pacific-slope Flycatcher? (Madera Canyon, AZ, USA, March 21, 2022)

Hi, I photographed this flycatcher in Madera Canyon on March 21, 2022. It did not vocalize. At the time some other birders reported a Pacific-slope Flycatcher in the same area, although I do not know if it is the same bird. Is there enough in the photo to confirm it? Thanks, Howard

Death Valley swift (California, US, March 15, 2022)

Hi, I saw a small swarm of swifts circling in the dark at Darwin Falls in Death Valley NP on March 15, 2022 near dusk. Terrible photos because of the fading light and distant birds, but I think there's enough to identify them as Black Swift, right? Black Swift and White-throated Swift were...
