Endemic & rare plants of Muğla Province - new book

For those interested in Turkish flora, there’s a new book out at the very reasonable advance price of 250 tl ( around £10 increasing to about £18 at a later date) on the endemic & rare plants of Muğla Province. The photographs are excellent, a big quality book in both Turkish & English. Includes...

Nile Soft-shell Turtle - Köyceğiz, Turkey

There’s little up to date information available in English on the Nile Soft-Shell Turtle in Turkey so thought I’d leave this here. Today I found what looks like a first year hatchling on the Köyceğiz side of the lake. Having seen a few “dinner plate” sized Soft-Shells, as well as a couple of...

Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

Having moved to Köyceğiz in SW Turkey recently I’ve been fitting in birding around rotten weather and lots of time consuming bureaucracy. As spring is kicking off quite obviously this week here I’ll record this weeks sightings then try and catch up with the last few weeks in a separate post...

Southern water pollution - appalling read

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jul/09/how-southern-water-sewage-dumping-scandal-unfolded I’m amazed at the scale of negligence, wilful destruction and size of the area affected. £90 million doesn’t sound anywhere near enough for reparation and restoration considering the damage done.

Eradicating Grey Squirrels - the natural way. Monbiot article

    Periyar, Kerala, India -December 2014

Apologies for the obligatory blurred photo. I'm puzzled by the 2 Finch/Munia type birds either side of the dove. I didn't actually see them, my wife took the picture of the dove, inadvertently with auto focus on hence the blurring of the birds. This was in a small clearing in the forest area...

    Kerala 2014 - advice needed

Afternoon all, I'm off to Kerala in December, from Kochi working our way south taking in Thattekad, Munnar, the backwaters and so on. Amazonian tribe make first contact due to threat

It takes a bit of lateral thinking why I've put this on the Conservation thread, but it's a reminder of the threat to the remoter parts of the world, and that if this is how human beings are treated there isn't much hope for the wildlife...

    Degu - potential invasive species?

I went into one of those Pet supermarket warehouse places this afternoon on an errand and came across something I hadn't seen before. Several cages of Degus, otherwise known as Brush tailed rat. Anybody know how long these have been on sale in the UK and does any public body (DEFRA?) risk...

1991 - Southern Giant Petrel- Italy

Having cut short a desultory and damp mornings birding I've been reading and wondering about a few old WP records. Does anyone have any details on the Southern Giant Petrel recorded for Italy in 1991? I found a possible reference to it been seen from a ferry between Ancona and Greece but...
