    Lothian Birding

It's the complex just south of the Merchant's Golf Course and looking on the map, could be the same bird that Gus saw. I think I have pics somewhere of the Eastfield hybrids if you are interested.

    Lothian Birding

This is part of the problem. I photographed this loving couple in Co Down last October where Carrion Crows are moving in to breed with the local Hoodies. From a distance, the lighter bird could look OK for a Hoodie but (IMHO) it's a hybrid. Last month I saw a good candidate for a pure Hoodie...

Bear on heat (good one) - that must be Yogi then? Good luck out West.

    Lothian Birding

Sounds like you enjoyed your day off Cal and nice finds with two description birds (looks like small white egrets without black wing tips do it for you). I was also at Spike Island yesterday looking for Buntings, among other things, but it was very quiet. Retreated to Torness again hoping for...

    Lothian Birding

From another Edinburgh invader (from the (far) west) and to add to your theory Cal, I had a late afternoon visit to the east coast on Friday where I counted a grand total of six LBBG. Two at the Whitesands quarry pond, one at the Skateraw dump, one north off Skateraw and two north off Dunbar...

    Lothian Birding

Happy Christmas everybody. Lothian first - Red-flanked Bluetail, old cottage at Skateraw, 13th October 09.57 (approx.) (I would insert a winking smilly here if I knew how to.)

    Lothian Birding

A bit quiet generally but at least the Black-necked off Kilspindie made it five species of grebe to-day. No Smew at Cobbingshaw either as the area south of the causeway, where it is normally seen, remained 80% frozen over. (Has it flitted to tropical Linlithgow?) Best bird at Cobb was a Gadwall...

    Lothian Birding

Re the gull passage over Staiton, I live about half a mile south of where BS noted and see this most days (and also hundreds of Corvids probably from the Duddingston roost). The same thing happens at dusk, but the return passage is less concentrated as it takes place over the last couple of...

    Lothian Birding

Thanks for posting the shot BS - I presume that's the second for Scotland? Nice bird. Out for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon and this morning. Nothing of much interest at Gladhouse, Aberlady, Port Seton harbour and Musselburgh. Spent a freezing hour at lunch-time studying mantle colour...

    Lothian Birding

Glad you cleared the pale CG up BS as I was a little confused myself. Ref your comment on Larids, I totally agree - the more you look, the greater the variance within the same species. Any Intermedius among the LBB this winter?
