I have had an odd thing happen with my SX50. I have always been able in P mode to get the AF assist magnifying frame to help me focus on the subject. That option has never been there in Aperture Priority which I normally use. I have therefore used the camera for a year without it. I had...

Excellent shots as usual Ian. It is clear that as time progresses you may have changed your set up ( I have not seen ISO 80 mentioned before or have missed it). After all these entries I wonder whether it might be appropriate for one of the SX50 experts to give a breakdown of the settings...

Roy, Thank you for the comments. I have set AV to only shoot in RAW and this year that has tended to be used on butterflies. I keep C1 set to use zoom with Jpeg etc. It may be that my 'problem' is that whilst I can view RAW through Faststone for my first run through I have to use DPP to...

    Canon SX50 Specs

I have had my SX50 for 9 or 10 months and still can't quite make up my ind about RAW and Superfine JPEG. Sometimes I think RAW has a slight advantage but another day the JPEG seems to do as well. Certainly for long distance record shots I always shoot JPEG which allows the TC to be added in...

Rich, Also having found it you can set it to the custom button (just left of the viewfinder and it is there at the press of a button.

Rob, I acquired the DCR-250 partly based on your butterfly photo. I have only had it a day or so but can't quite get it to work how I thought it would. Is there a specific technique as it seems to be a fixed focus. How close do you need to get. I can get the attachment to work easier on my...

I do like the way this camera will get into the undergrowth and allow you to get detail. The reed warbler was really well tucked up. The nightingale was a bonus but there is a bit of movement in it. Both at 1200mm on P.

I have just come back from Trinidad and Tobago. At Asa Wright the camera would pick up easily on Trogons etc but I did struggle with Mannakins in the woods ending up with similar photos to the kingfisher. I came to the conclusion that the focus point (even on small) may have been larger than...

I bought a hahnel which has caused me no problems. I suspect there are many out there.

Ian, C1 and 2 are settings you set up and then 'fix' them in the camera. At the moment C1 is obviously set at 28mm or thereabouts. Set the camera up how you want and then go into menu and save the settings under C1 or 2. When you go to C1 or 2 in the future it will automatically zoom to...

Roy, thanks I will keep trying. You might have answered my question in that I was trying it out and there was nothing really moving. I was trying sports mode as there are a couple of people getting some success on birds in flight using it.

    Canon SX50 Specs

I met my first problem with the SX50 today. Having got some good record shots at a feeder I thought I would try Sports mode for the first time and struggled with focussing. I think it was down to servo focussing and have never used it before on my old DSLR. I took it off and was a lot happier...

    Canon SX50 Specs

Ian, I have had the camera 2 days and managed a couple of quick shots of fieldfare in a field yesterday on Auto. More than happy but need to play with it a bit more (a bit busy and need to play with colour). I think I am heading to RAW only and setting up C1 for record shots. Sports mode...

    Canon SX50 Specs

This thread seems to be getting a long one. I hope it gets a bit longer as I picked up my sx50 this afternoon. My reason for getting it was exactly as outlined above. Nikon D80 and lens getting heavy and it would be nice to carry something light with the binos. It may be record shots I get...

    Canon SX50 Specs

Neil, I find that interesting. When faced with a white bird (if it is the dominant exposure point) most cameras tend to underexpose, do you think this camera needs the extra -EV figure because it has a tendency to overexpose

As it seems with most Canons any filter holder has to be added. lensmate are advertising an imminent release of a filter holder for the camera. I have used lensmate before on other cameras and have always been pleased with the result.
