    Buff-bellied Pipit

No Jane, its still as short as ever. For the real Pipit freaks, a Richard's was reported just down the road from Looe this morning as well. Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

if anyone is interested, the bird is still there today, and looking just as distinctive as it ever did!!! Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

That's just what I'm waiting for too. If it gets a lavender head, and a Rosy breast I think we can safely rule out any Meadow Pipit influence ;) Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

You and me both!!!!! It's still there if anyone is interested Darrell

Hi Jane, Yes, wing, bill and tail that's all Are you any nearer to a conclusion? Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Shame on me - I can't remember. I had my eye to the viewfinder!!! Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Jane, I've been through the video frame by frame, and there is nothing better on the tail I'm afraid. If you'd like a copy of the video on CD which is playable on your PC just pm me and I'll send it to you. Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Jane, Yes it is still about. It is a fascinating area if you like Pipits. We know that we have petrosus, littoralis, pratensis, and this thing! If nothing else it gives a great opportunity to check out a known littoralis in winter plumage Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

I'll run the video again Jane, but the problem with videograbs is that 9 out of 10 frames are blurred because the bird is moving. if I have one I'll post it tonight when I get home. Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Marathon ringing session which possibly raised more questions than answers. The measurements are too big for Meadow Pipit so that can be discounted. They are fine for Rock Pipit - slightly small but well within the range for a female i.e wing length 87mm. The tail looks like Rock Pipit too...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

As an added incentive for anyone who was thinking of coming to see this bird, there is an Eagle Owl just down the road at Downderry. Today it was sitting in the hedge in a farmers field happily munching on a fan-tailed pigeon! I don't know which cage it has jumped out of but it is an impressive...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Charles, Thanks for your input - as a 'man on the spot' you're going to be a useful source of information!! It was the streaking on the back which concerned us most about the identity of this bird, however a quick trawl on the internet provided us with photos taken in January which clearly...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Jane, Superficially your pic looks like our bird, however the Looe Pipit has a bigger eyering, which is unbroken, and a very noticable supercillium, which extends beyond the eye. The streaks on the breast are also longer and sharper, less 'splodgy' The lores are paler than on your photo, and...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Jane, Spent all day yesterday trying to catch it. It went over the net, walked under the net, and even flew towards the net before seeing it and doubling back on itself. We'll try again when the New Year holiday is over and the site is a bit quieter (and there is less wind to stop the net...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Jane, This is what Dick Newell says - I hope he doesn't mind being quoted on here "I cannot reconcile its features with any candidate European pipit: Meadow Pipit: nature and extent of breast and flank streaking. Rock Pipit: Overal tone, white outer tail feather, pink legs, small bill...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Stephen Unfortunately all the photos seem to make it look rather Meadow Pipit-like. In the field however it has an obvious Rock Pipit structure, being bigger and bulkier, with a less rounded head than the Meadow Pipits. It associates (loosely) with Rock Pipits, and is aggressive towards Rock...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Here we are: Four videograbs for you all to peruse. Note the short tail, thin bill and the length of the hindclaw - don't know if that has any significance! The malar 'splodge' seems to be more pronounced than last week, though maybe that is an effect of the light. That eyering really is as...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Just back from Yorkshire and I spent all day with it today. Once I've downloaded the video I'll post shots of any ID features. Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Jane, The bird had a wet face from constantly turning over the seaweed so that may affect the colour of the lores. About 20 people saw the bird yesterday including some very big names in Cornish birding. No one was prepared to say it wasn't japonicus but no one who was there thought it was...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

The call is quite weak, Meadow Pipit like. Checking www.bird-hybrids.com for available literature on Pipit hybrids I find that there are no references to Meadow x Rock or Meadow x Water Pipit hybrids. Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Well, all sorts of possibilities are flying around from some very experienced birders - Buff-bellied Pipit, hybrid Water x Meadow Pipit, and just plain Meadow Pipit. The latter are from two people who haven't seen the bird, but all who were there are convinced it is something they haven't seen...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

I refound the bird again this morning after about an hour or so. I've included some videograbs because I need some help. Does anyone know if this amount of mantle streaking is ok forjaponicus

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Thanks Harry - Delighted is not the word which came to mind - blind panic maybe. However even 24 hours on we're both still confident of the ID - Whether it will get past the BBRC and BOU without supporting photos is another matter. I found this site http://www.xs4all.nl/~calidris/variabbp.htm...

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Aquila, There were 4 Purple Sandpipers, but we only managed to see three, as events rather overtook us. Both are old hippies of course - but only one is miserable! Andrew. Afternoons will be better at the moment - it's low tide out there now Darrell

    Buff-bellied Pipit

Hi Aquila, Pure fluke, as these things always are. We'd only gone there because we'd done the usual haunts on the Tamar in double quick time - because it was cold and there was nothing there, just 2 Med Gulls and an Avocet at St Johns lake. A quick lunch of cheese on toast (with Marmite...
