AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I actually made a go at what the OP wanted this weekend. Maybe I will post my name options tonight to add back some fun

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

AOS updates once a year, and we don't usually know the decisions completely until the update. So there should be time to go through both committees before the annual checklist update, which means any new split/lump would come with a "new name" ready to go. But it does potentially mean a slight...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I want to say this was announced well before the common name decision, although perhaps obliquely. My understanding was that the English Bird Names Committee was going to become permanent and also deal with further name changes. This actually may be a positive, because as you say its not like...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

Affiliation wise I was considering the journal's AOS publishes. IIRC, you are required to use the most recent taxonomy. Granted this just consists of Ornithology and Ornithological Applications (and speaking of names, boy do those also suck). But still its an influence. Neotropical bird guides...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I assume that means Remsen will still be running it then? Although without affiliation to any sort of organization with wider membership, their effective clout will be greatly diminished. While people weren't obligated before to follow their lead, they will have even less reason now. Although...

I am really confused about the nature of SACC. Remsen clearly stepped down from them, but they have there own unaffiliated website and clearly do things in a very different manner. So it's always felt a bit more detached from AOS compared to NACC, which is well integrated into the parent...

Let me introduce you to the Madidi Titi Monkey: "Its scientific name is Plecturocebus aureipalatii,[2] the specific epithet meaning "of the Golden Palace", in reference to GoldenPalace.com, an online casino which paid US$650,000 to have the species named after it, with benefits going toward the...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I think we saw the end of the standardization movement when IOC started to back-peddle on there own names in favor of newer ones some years ago. I means its telling that WGAC is completely avoiding that issue by just agreeing to list multiple names. I was the biggest cheerleader for...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I thought this was also a pretty ironic statement. Although not to come off as Ageist or to devalue Remsen's work, should anyone really serve 20+ years on a checklist committee? I understand if there are actually very few relevant folks who could do the work, but I am skeptical you can say that...

But will the Princeton Field Guide, which stands to be one of the best field guides for North America yet made, do so? Since Howell is involved in that, who hasn't been shy about rejecting AOS taxonomy in his own publications, there is a non-zero chance they will choose to ignore the new common...

I Raty would be the person to check about those. cygnoid however sounds like a typo in Birdlife, not a difference in nomenclature

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

This coming alongside the WGAC reconciliation process I suspect might result in a death blow to the AOS as an overall authority for checklist purposes. Especially since we are now up to two committee member retirements (that I know of). No matter where you fall, it does feel like the way this...

Wow...what an absolute garbage paper. The idea that anyone would think the COMMENTS SECTION of a popular newspaper would at all represent a nonbiased sample of individuals is ridiculous. I've had undergrads who could point out the problems of this study.

A lot of folk's initial gut reaction is disagreement, because it is such a major change and because it paints all patronyms as equally problematic. I think in the next few weeks you will see at least some folks mellow out over it, like Kaufman did and like I did.

Michael Retter recently posted an excerpt from 1957 from the Carolina Bird Club Newsletter: "To the casual field observer and backyard bird watcher, the new fifth edition of the AOU Check-List of North American Birds will seem to have only nuisance value. His Duck Hawk has become a "Peregrine...

The same thing will happen with every other name change (at least change not due to a taxonomic lump). People will move on and the old names will just be curious relicts in old field guides.

There is a current SACC proposal about the split, which follows on a recently published paper. Last I checked the votes were positive for the most part, but I don't think any final decisions were made. I like Social Hawk for Harris's, which I think gets at the unique social behavior of the...

is the Humboldt penguin named after the person or the current? If the latter, the penguin is safe, in the same way that Hudsonian Whimbrel would be safe.

I am trying to compile a potential list of replacement names, in part going through online references to other names. It's kind of surprising the number of really evocative names got binned for much lamer ones. Names like Painted Longspur, Black-crowned Sapsucker, and Tricolored Phalarope were...

AOS to discard patronyms in English names

I was mostly curious because SACC has been largely silent on this issue, and is still inventing common names honoring people (which also suck as names) e.g. The rightly ignored Kerr's Black-throated Trogon (no offense to the person being honored). Clements/IOC went with I think Choco...
