Sorry Jerry but HN is dead right on this one. HN I propose Chimay Blue to represent the Leica 'flavour'. Lee

Hi Blues Brother Brock Thanks for your condolences. My diabetes is not serious and is well controlled at the moment by diet and tablets. Very sad news about B.B. but my goodness has had a good long innings. He was one of those guitarists that you just needed one note to recognise who it was...

And 151 metres when it was a 7x Night Owl and when it was a 7x Dialyt before that. But 148m with 8x is a nice view. L

HN Its an attractive picture but unfortunately, being diabetic, my consumption of beer is now hugely controlled instead of just huge :smoke: Lee

Well if it comes down to a choice between knockers and beer, I'll choose the former :king: Lee

    Do you ignore Leica ?

There is skunk juice/weasel water/cat's pee masquerading as beer everywhere I have travelled in Europe and Africa but almost everywhere there is good beer waiting to be found, until Kammerdiner arrives and quaffs it all......;) Lee

Ah, Belgium, land of the all-conquering Stella Artois! Actually, of all the mass-produced lagers I like Stella the most. But you are right, Belgium and Germany both have many, many excellent beers. Lee

HN Can you please stop wittering on about the price of binoculars and get back to that metre (not a yard) of beer? I'll take Spendrup's Old Gold for mine please B (: Lee

The above quote is what you opened with Sam. Seems to me like you are saying birding at 1,000m is irrelevant. And maybe it is for you and there is nothing wrong with that. For me it is not irrelevant but rather than just stating I thought you were mistaken I gave examples of the circumstances...

Hya Bob I calculated that the FOV difference between an SF and a Uvid at 20m (22 yds) would be a bit more than 40cm (16"), enough for say 10 Willow Warblers side-by-side, more than enough for a Golden Oriole sideways-on, and, considered as a 20cm annulus around the edge of a FOV would give more...

It absolutely is not trivial. Whether it is important for individuals is a matter for them, but make no mistake this is a significant difference. Lee

    Do you ignore Leica ?

This has nothing to do with the models of bins I chose, just the discussion about fields of view. Lets just call them a 148m at 1km versus a 130m at 1km bin. And no I don't own an SF Lee

Comparatively small perhaps but for example the FOV difference between an SF and a Uvid at 20m would be a bit more than 40cm, enough for say 10 Willow Warblers side-by-side, more than enough for a Golden Oriole sideways-on, and, considered as a 20cm annulus around the edge of a FOV would give...

I've never heard of a UVHD breaking either but then again I've never heard of a metre drop onto a stone floor being called a minor drop either :-O Lee

Dear Manya I am sure that somewhere on the internet there is a website called Pony Forum. There you will find kindred souls who love and cherish all things horsey.:gh: When you log-in there you will not have to worry about boys, bins or strangely bearded men masqerading as women. :-O Lee

Gijs I agree with you regarding Leica bins, but companies have to survive in markets that are commanded by the desires and behaviour of their potential customers. It would be a terribly sad event if we were to lose Leica and I hope this never happens. Lee

Just to get back on-topic for a moment. Anyone who ignores Leica is doing themselves a disservice. Leica offers a view that is as enjoyable as the other two alphas. Lee

You mean he might be a girlie lurking behind a male-sounding name, just like Chosun?? Hmm. On the whole I think this is unlikely, given the growth of his beard, but you never know, some Russian 'lady' athletes are also quite beardy. :-O Lee

    Do you ignore Leica ?

Sam You are right about most situations but I find myself searching big areas and therefore benefit greatly from large FOVs when: Scanning skies for raptors or hirundines. Scanning lakes or the sea for re-surfacing ducks, divers, cormorants, seals, whales and otters. And even at short...
