Norfolk birding (323 Viewers)

After successfully connecting with the Spectacled Warbler today I was also pleased to see 2 Spoonbills feeding in the pool just east of the seawall as well as a Water Vole in a nearby dyke along with several Bearded Tits and a Buzzard or two.
A Pink-footed Goose was unexpected and was in the long grass looking south from the last 90 degree bend in the seawall before reaching the boardwalk.
Before returning home, I also connected with a booming Bittern along the North Norfolk coast. This wasn't at Titchwell and so I'm not sure if I should give location but happy to divulge to any of the regulars (Stuart, Andy et al) on here via PM to make sure it's a known bird.
 
We had a good day too, at Burnham car park we got news that the Spectacled Warbler may have flown off South so I spent the walk up trying to persuade Steve not to bother which he eventually relented to, apologies to the birders we encountered who were persuaded that it had gone too. With some relief we went onto Burnham Norton and started walking up the track. Here we had the first and second of four Cuckoos we saw throughout the day. Conflict of interest when postitive news came on the pager again with me quite happy to carry on wandering round the marshes while Steve sped off back to the dunes. I immediately heard the reel of a gropper then had fine views as it perched on a close bramble patch, also a Pink foot and Bar-headed Goose and Spoonbill. Curiosity eventually did get the better of me and had nice views of the Spec. Also in an around the area, 2 Med Gull, another Spoonbill, Turtle Dove, Quail, Hobby, 2 Red Kites, Grey Wagtail. Stork chase time - brief views of the Blyth's Reed, which time the Black Stork had sneaked past crowds of birders all the way along the coast, chased it and tried to cut it off at Cromer to no avail. Anyway got a week up here and will try to secure some employment, check your nearest tree, ditch or campsite for the latest update! Good to be back on the coast

Mick not Norfolk but there has been a big movement o fKites down south with flocks of up to 14 through Eastbourne, continental birds corresponding with influx of Black Kites? Certainly there has been an early summer movement

Titchwell June 4th

Today's highlights

Garganey - drake on fresh marsh
Little ringed plover - 4 on fresh marsh
Bittern - 2 birds in flight over reedbed
Spoonbill - 2 on tidal pool

Staying in Thornham from Friday for a week. Not sure I'll have much in the way of internet but will post sightings when I'm back. I know most of the sights pretty well but if anyone has any good local gen for anything tricky (but not prone to disturbance- not that I'm overly disturbing- you know what I mean) I'd love to hear it on here or by PM if necessary. Also, if someone could arrange for the Spectacled Warbler to stay until Friday that would be much appreciated.

Has the spectacled warbler been seen today? Planning a visit to Titchwell tomorrow would be fantastic to see such a rarity while we're in the area!
 
Yes. Last RBA was of it still singing at 3.10pm today Burnham Overy Dunes 300yrds west of boardwalk on Gun Hill. Park on north side of Bunham Overy Staithe and follow sea wall NE, or by A149 1/2 ml E of village and follow track north.

Cuckoo fest

Has anybody else picked up on how good a year it appears to be for cuckoos, particularly along the north Norfolk coastal strip? Surely it has to be the best year for a long time?

Just a thought, without any real qualification, but is it possible that the delayed spring last year for local coastal breeding birds, such as reed warbler and meadow pipit, meant that the arrival of the cuckoos and their egg-laying synchronised perfectly with the host species breeding activity. Did they perhaps produce a bumper crop of youngsters that have returned this year? Perhaps the advancing springs of recent years had been a major factor in the decline of cuckoos?

Norfolk Bird Report

The future of the Norfolk Bird Report, at least in its current form, is looking distinctly uncertain. Nevertheless, Tony Leech and I are attempting to work out a way forward.

Having considered what is involved in producing the Report, we are proposing a number of different roles, including Editor, Recorder, Rarities Coordinator and Data Manager.

At the moment, we are particularly looking for expressions of interest in the key role of Data Manager. The role’s main tasks are likely to be:
• Receiving records
• Uploading records to the database
• Exporting data to species text drafters
• Liaising with BTO over tailored outputs on common birds

The role would suit someone with good IT skills and a knowledge of the county’s birds. A full briefing and handover will be provided by the current Recorders and there will also be the opportunity to develop/streamline the role.

Titchwell June 6th

Today's highlights

Red kite - 15 west between 10:30 and 12:00 including a flock of 10! The previous day record for the reserve was 5 in 2012
Greenshank - 2 on fresh marsh
Med gull - 3 adults on fresh marsh

Had a really enjoyable day at Titchwell yesterday (05.06.14) highlights for us included:

Marsh Harrier 3
Kestrel 1
Red Crested Pochard 4m 1f
Little Tern 2
Spoonbill 2
Bar Tailed Godwit 25

Also visited Burnham Overy and had some really good views of the Spectacled Warbler :)
 
Anyone have further information on the 'small' Eagle at Lynford? LGRE has it as Lesser Spotted seen by 5 observers. Could this be the possible Booted from the week before last or is Norfolk awash with Eagles?
 
Perhaps the more relevant question to ask is when is one of these possible/probable eagles going to get photographed? It does not appear a problem elsewhere.

A few thoughts:
1) Not all birders have cameras (particularly when they're sitting in a traffic jam!)
2) As anyone who's tried to photograph a flying bird with a 500mm lens will know, autofocus is remarkably bad at capturing images of birds in flight against a blue or grey sky: most bird photographers I know have their lenses on auto as default.
3) Birders with cameras (as opposed to photographers who image birds!) will generally LOOK at a bird for I/d before thinking of taking a photo.
A STE sat in a tree for hours on end is an entirely different photographic prospect to a low-flying raptor tazzing over a forest clearing or road.

Living in East Norfolk, where Buzzards are still a novelty, I tend to try and photograph EVERY raptor I see as a record for my blog, but still miss the odd Kite, Buzzard, Hobby etc....

People do not have problems elsewhere. Agree raptors from a moving car can prove difficult:) Also agree flying birds with a 500 f4 is not easy. Lots of birders carry smaller 300 and 400 lens. Given the number of Eagles reported this spring would have thought one of them would have been carrying a camera?
