White-tailed Bumblebee

Not all that surprised, given our ridiculous apology for a winter, to encounter a Buff-tailed or White-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris/lucorum flying around Sheringham seafront, this afters.

Don't suppose the poor thing will last very long.

Anyone else had any bees so far this year ?

We had a Buff-tailed in the garden on Boxing day but not seen any since.

Saw this bee today, looks different to the ones I am used to (but assume it is common) but I am struggling to make a confident ID. Any thoughts? I was thinking tawny mining bee but just from googling as I have no bee knowledge.

Found on a road side verge

Hi Graham.

I can't identify it to species, but it's a Sawfly, probably either one of the Argidae or one of the Tenthredinidae. The pale coloured 'knee' joints look an interesting feature, so with the right literature it might be identifiable.

Regards,

James
