For my education what distinguishes this from a non-breeding Common Loon?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Regards,
Roger

Common has a bulkier body, more massive bill that isn't upturned like this one, has more colour on the neck with remnants of the white collar, and the back is more checkered rather than speckled.

Common Loon is larger, darker on the back and the bill is really heavy looking. Also scruffier-looking at the tail end of the body. Also the Common Loon tends to hold the bill horizontally whereas Red Throated will sometimes hold its bill up at an angle.

Common Loon on the left, Red Throated on the right.
