Nesting blackbirds (1 Viewer)

I have blackbirds nesting in my very overgrown shrubs. I know that I musn't disturb them but my husband is anxious to tidy the garden. What is a safe period to wait? I believe that blackbirds can have several broods. Are we talking weeks or months?

Hi Liz,
About 2 weeks incubation then another 2 weeks or so 'till the young leave the nest, but like you say, they can have up to 5 broods in the same nest.A good excuse to leave that bit of the garden untouched if you ask me.
Mark.

Mark - my book says blackbirds are double or treble brooded, sometimes four broods.

liz - an untidy garden is ideal for birds, I think you need to start persuading you husband about this!

Five!! Do you mean I should wait until September? I'll have no grass left, the way the shrubs are spreading!
I've also spotted what I think are two Great Tits going in and out of a shrub - could these be nesting too?
As you might have guessed, I'm new to birding - Are there more birds about this year, or is it just that I'm getting hooked?
Liz

Good to relax!
