Manfrotto monopod doesn't work with micro head?? (1 Viewer)

Think I might have made a rookie error...

I got a Manfrotto Befree tripod to go with a Nikon ED50 - which seems like a good pairing.

I also got a Manfrotto 290 monopod as I thought the heads would be interchangeable, although the Befree's micro head will screw onto the monopod the plate/disc is bigger on the monopod which means you cannot turn the tightening adjuster for the micro head as it butts up against the disc...

So have I simply just tried to pair two pieces of gear that do not work together? If so I'll just send back the monopod - know of a monopod that works with the micro head from the Befree??
