Long-billed Curlew? (1 Viewer)

On the shore of Monterey Bay (California) this bird was walking and feeding along the shoreline. With a bill like that I was thinking of a Long-billed Curlew. But it seems to have a shorter bill as the other Curlews in the gallery. Also it has a more prominent drawing on the head and it's color is not that brown. It also has a more white belly.
Is this a young Curlew or is it some complete different bird?

Indeed, that was my (not particularly serious) point, one can't tell but can only play the odds.

Aye, but the original poster is from the Netherlands, so may well be interested to know it's potentially a different species to the Whimbrels 'back home' :t:
