Any suggestions for nightvision gear? Nothing too overly expensive, but something that actually works. Say $200-300 US dollars.

Looking for something to use when camping or in the woods - more for curisoity and entertainment's sake. We're more interested in critters, than warfare. ;-)

Stay away from the early Russian and ex-Soviet bloc optics. Both have been found to have excessive amounts of radiation leakage, which can cause permanent damage to your optic nerves. Also, some studies have suggested that prolonged use of US-made gen-1 optics can have the same effect. But, stepping up to the gen-2, 3, or 4 optics is going to hit you pretty hard in the wallet as well.

If you're just going to use them occasionally, then a selection of gen-1 equipment (and some gen-2) can be found at WalMart.

I'd suggest doing a google search for night vision products, as well as checking out hunting/sporting goods stores, and military surplus stores.

Here are a couple of web links to get you started:

Thanks GR!

That's exactly what I was looking for... a quick education! I especially appreciate the info about the radiation.. I had not seen anything about that in the little bit of reading I'd been doing.

Thanks again!
