anyone using this tamron ? (1 Viewer)

I have used this lens last year for close-up photography only. Quite good optical quality and quite bad mechanical quality.
Lots of plastic, loose focus ring, poor AF speed. Given its low price however this little lens does very well.

I've recently replaced it with the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro.
I find it virtually identical to the Tamron when used in macro mode, but a bit better on normal ranges.
The AF is faster, focus ring is more adequate and the overall build quality seems a bit more solid (meaning no as wobbling).

I've attached a few shots taken with the Tamron.

how do you find the sigma id use it mainly at the 300mm end

Wide open it's very poor. Closed down a stop or two, I'd say this:
good in macro mode,
usable at short distances,
soft at anything beyond 3-4m.
I'd never use it for birds unless they're very tame, very close and have lots of light.

non-DI version

Have the previous, non-DI version that I use for Macros.

As others have commented, better systems out there for the 70-300 range such as the Nikkor 70-300 VRII - not sure for the Sony mounts. The Sigma 70-300 APO Macro is reputed to be fairly good on Nikon mounts.
