Panasonic GH3 (1 Viewer)

Well-known member
I took the GH3 out for an outing to Victoria Park, here in Hong Kong for the first time. I had the 100-300 mm lens attached and for the birds I switched on the ETC ( Electronic Teleconverter) and ran in Silent Mode and Aperture Priority.
Here are a few taken at various focal lengths.

So these are OOC jpgs if I understand correctly?

Niels

Niels,
The first and forth are from RAW files and I've used the Vivid Film mode in Silkypix to give them a little boost. The others are jpegs as they were shot with the ETC (electronic teleconverter) function switched on.

Headed out on the ferry to Lamma Island today in foggy/cloudy weather with ocassional weak sun. Took the GH3 with 14-45 kit zoom, 100-300 mm zoom, Leica 21/2.8 and Zeiss (Nikon) 28/2.0 lenses.
Here are some of the photos.

Like Neil I have a GH3 and Panasonic 100-300mm zoom, I have mainly been using it in single shot mode because in burst mode I am having a problem with the previous shots review coming up in the viewfinder and I can't find anyway to eliminate it.

Here are some shots using the Panasonic100-300mm zoom

Bob

Bob,
In hi speed burst mode I tried to lock on with the AF and then blasted away. With the very low contrast light and the distance my success rate was very low. My problem was not following the birds flight (they were a long way off) but that the AF didn't lock on even for the first frame.
For movement on the ground it wasn't a problem ( no more than with digiscoping anyway).
Neil.

Here are a few photos taken with the GH3 and the Panasonic 100-300 mm Lens out on the mudflats.
The last photo was taken with the Nikon 300/4 afs lens with an adapter and MF.

Visited Wetland Park in Hong Kong yesterday with the GH3. Another dreary and cool day but some birds around due to the high tide.
I'm liking this 100-300 mm lens more and more as you can hang it around your neck all day. It's especially good for video although better with a tripod collar.
Here is a short video

ps I'm planning to get a tripod collar for it.

I am using the GH2 + 100-300 and definitely liking that combo. I am curious to how much better (for stills) you are finding your setup if you have any experience with the previous camera?

Niels

Niels,
I only have the G1 and GF1 , so no experience with the GH2.

Hi Neils

I've been using the GH3 with the 100-300 for 16 months now. Prior to that I was using the 100-300 on the GH1.

It's really difficult to see any difference in sharpness or quality between images taken with the GH1 and those with the GH3. In fact I think the GH1 images are in some cases sharper than the GH3 images. This may be due to the higher resolution of the GH3 out resolving the lens. This is all the more frustrating as I also moved from the 14-140 GH1 kit lens to the X series 12-35. The 12-35 is a fantastic lens. It's very sharp and shows what the camera can do in terms of sharpness.

So if your main purpose for upgrading from a lesser camera to the GH3 or GH4 is to improve the quality and sharpness of images taken with the 100-300, don't upgrade. You won;t see an improvement until Panasonic improves the quality of the lens. I also noticed some funny business with the ISO in the GH1 compared to the GH3. I think the GH1 iso 100 is the same as the GH3 iso 200.

One thing that improved the quality of my images (both GH1 and GH3) was moving to the pro version of SilkyPix. They had an offer last year for Panasonic users to upgrade to the Pro version from the Pany supplied version for $40. The pro version has better noise handling and a neat feature for enhancing darker areas with dodging or HDR.

I maintain a photo life list and this gallery has the new adds and upgrades for 2014, all taken with the GH3 and 100-300 combo. Sometimes conditions or the timing isn't the best so some images may be lacking in quality but they still represent the best that I've been able to achieve for that species. The images are best viewed in full screen (double click the large image).

Some nice photos in your gallery Paul.
My version of the 100-300 lens is the original one from when I got the G1 when it first came out. My impression was that it needed to be at f8 and in sunshine for best results.
I'm hoping that Panasonic might introduce a faster tele lens for the new GH4 or maybe Sigma might get in on the action. Their 30/2.8 lens for Micro Four thirds is certainly a nice lens.
Neil.
