Proposed Birdforum/Artforum fieldtrip... (1 Viewer)

Whilst out birding yesterday gave this idea some thought, it has been floating around my find for a while now...

Basically the idea is a field trip lasting a week or so. The participants would be connected to the artforum, people interested in drawing/painting/sculting birds. Basically the entire week would be devoted to getting out on the field with the sketchbooks.

The trip would probably be during 2009, which is a fair bit down the road to give those interested plenty of time to ready themselves. Next year would probably too soon, though perhaps next fall might be an option, can be openly thrown out for debate. The trip would be open to all those interested whether young, old, beginner or world famous wildlife art mogul.

The location could be jointly decided by those interested in going. Was thinking that those seriously interested could suggest five potential locations(within Europe) with reasons as to why they belive that spot would be good. Likely locations would fall into the categories of not costing a fortune to get to and being rich in interesting birdlife, perhaps with a bit of aesthetic appeal..

Would be rather nice I think. There would be the birding experience for one, a major plus. Then there would be the opportunity to share our work in the evenings, discuss the day, swap tips, and of course socialise over a tipple or two, argue about any dodgy ID's etc! Most of all it would be a great oppurtunity to draw all those here in the forum together in the flesh so to speak. Seeing as we have so much in common I can only imagine it going well...

The trip should spawn a great deal of artwork, whilst there and after we all get back home. Perhaps a joint exhibition of sorts could even result, either online here or at a studio somewhere?

Anyhow, the idea is now out of my mind and out there for general consideration. Thoughts, ideas and suggestions most welcome here...

Yes!
Just need to have a bit of a think about location. Oooh, would love to go anywhere, actually. Hmm now let's have a think . . . .. . .
Okay- somewhere coastal with fresh/brackish water close by.

Love it! 2009 sounds better than next fall (gives some time to start putting away). Sounds like such a fun idea -- sketch, bird and meet some Forumers in the flesh too!

Gets my vote.

This sounds really good!! What about Spain, The cork oak Forrests or maybe
open to anything really. Just thinking somewhere warm would be nice!

2009 i agree is a better option. This is a cracking Idea . We had rumblings of this on my
Morrocan Thread did'nt we? thought it might be possible then.

this is an excellent idea, definitely definitely!

Suggestions: Camargue (easyjet to Marseille) Llobregat (easyjet to Barcelona), but anywhere really. S'Albufera on Mallorca perhaps, but please, somewhere coastal, with lots of waders and ducks and less woodpeckers (but a couple for Tim, sure you must be missing them!)

I quite fancy Mallorca- never been but have heard good reports.

Corfu, as Tim suggested!! and I also like the Idea of Mallorca , Thanks Nick
for planting that one. What about Sardinia ? or is that expensive?

I've never birded in a group befor so would be interesting! Would we need to
hire a guide or should we rely on someones experience from here.

I would hope Paschalis (Spizaetos) might be persuaded to do the guiding bit - I'm sure he's familiar with the area. Nick and Alan are also pretty sh*t-hot on the continental stuff - so that ought to cover that, d'ya think?

Sounds great! I would be very tempted to come as well. Norfolk is obviously convenient for me but Spain, Corfu and the Camargue are all places I'd love to spend some time birding in so I'll happily go with the majority as long as its not too expensive! I always like to plan my holidays way in advance anyway!!

Great idea, I'm not sure I'd be able to make it but i'd definately make an effort to wrangle it.

Hi all,

Many many apologies for my active absence at BF, but my time is extremely limited at the moment, and I’m sure you understand!
I’ve just noticed your suggestion Tim, to propose me as a kind of guide in the case of Corfu and wanted to thank you for it.
To be honest I’ve never been on Corfu before, so I tried to contact friends having been there to watch birds. The final result was that Corfu except of cultural and landscape beauty has not much to offer to someone like you and me, artists who want to see and sketch birds.
Furthermore I would suggest the wetlands of Northern Greece easily accessible over Thessalonica airport,Places like Kerkini lake with plenty of all Heron species, Pelicans , ducks ,Rollers, bee eaters and and…..
or the Lagoons of Nestos river and Dadia Raptor forest in Thrace.
Lesvos is of course an other well-known place, but I’m sure it’s overbooked, and not easy at all to find a quiet place to sketch!
On the other side, having talked about it to Nikolai Kraneis(Tim knows) he suggested immediately his motherland Bulgaria, which combines
mountainous species, Wetlands, coastal areas for Waders at Black sea, and most of all the advantage of the Low prices which makes the Land particularly attractive for the West-Euro-Europeans!
In addition it would be possible to hire Nikolai as a guide and fellow artist at the same time!
Hoping I helped you a little,

spizaetos

PS: Attached, a couple of webpages regarding birding in Bulgaria, and of course this one of Nikolai!

I'm always up for a trip to Bulgaria- which hopefully isn't a reason for you folk to decide on somewhere else! The trip could perhaps start with a Wallcreeper session in Trigrad Gorge before heading out for the coast....
