March Moths (1 Viewer)

First moths of the year last night in the garden.

Common quaker 3
Hebrew character 2
Clouded drab 1
Pine beauty 1

I think pine beauty is new to my 10km square, but I am never sure which square I am. According to OS maps my grid ref is SJ 856 526 (north end of Stoke-on-trent). Could someone check and make sure I am thinking I am the square I think I am? If you search http://www.staffsmoths.org.uk/ for pine beauty, I reckon I am the empty square South-East of the SJ, the one diagonally between the two red dots.

Thank you

Adam

I think the square I refer to is my square. Thanks for the help. I'll ask the county recorder to confirm pine beauty is new to my square though, just to be sure.

Moth trap at RSPB Coombes Valley last night.

Clouded drab 48
Common quaker 47
Oak beauty 7
Small quaker 26
Hebrew character 24
Twin-spotted quaker 11
Chestnut 6
Satellite 2
Early grey 1
And hopefully I am right that the attached photo is an Early tooth striped (corrections welcome). Making 173 moths in total. Puts my 7 from the previous night to shame a little!!

Have moved the trap to an area with some more willow than the garden, good bright shed wall behind the 125MV trap. I still never expected to see what I have just seen - a female Emperor moth! Have now put her into a net cage to see if we can attract a male - never tried this before.
Could be an intersting morning.

Agree with early tooth-striped. I had my first of the year last night. Apart from Diurnea fagella and a small flat micro I've only had Orthosia sp and oak beauty the last three nights.

Hi all,

Put the trap out last-night for the first time this year. The trap was set in mature deciduous woodland in a private garden. I was surprised at the activity I recorded. This mornings haul was:

Common Quaker: 11
Brindled Pug: 1
Double-striped Pug: 1
Hebrew Character: 1
*Early Grey: 2 (Image 2)
*Pale Pinion: 1 (Image 1)
*Twin-spotted Quaker: 2 (Image 3)
*Clouded Drab: 1 (Image 4)
*Diurnea flagella: 2
*Depressaria daucella: 1

(* denotes a species which I had not encountered before)

In all, that amounts to 10 species consisting of 23 individuals.

All the best,

Seán

Hi all,

Could not get out to prime habitat last-night so I set my trap in the garden. I didn't expect anything at all but I at least managed to trap:

2 x Hebrew Character
1 x Common Quaker

All the best,

Seán

Brittany Moths

I've been in Brittany in the Cotes d'Armor area and had some good moths including 3 species I've not seen before:

Shoulder Stripe
Blossom Underwing
and I am pretty sure: Conistra rubiginosa which I'll check out.

Over the weekend, I managed some good number of Hebrew Character and Common Quaker. Also:

Oak Beauty
Early Grey
Clouded Drab
Small Quaker
Chestnut

Socksitis - I would love to get Emperor Moth. I've never even seen one!! Well done.

Hello,

just a few moths visited me the last week on my balcony in an urban area. But I'm happy about them and I'm looking forward to put the light-trap in my mother's garden - which is more suitable for the purpose |=)|.

Orthosia cruda - Small Quaker
Orthosia incerta - Clouded Drap
Orthosia cerasi - Common Quaker
Orthosia munda - Twin-spotted Quaker
Achlya flavicornis - Yellow Horned
Gymnoscelis rufifasciata - Double-striped Pug
Agriopis marginaria - Dotted Border

Best wishes,
Kathrin
