Sigma 150-500mmwith 2X converter? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Anyone had any experience with the Sigma 150-500mm with a 2X Teleconverter? I would probably only use the set up for record shots or if the light was fantastic, as the largest aperture I would be able to use would be F13!!

Many Thanks

Alex

I have taken a few shots with a 150-500 using a 1.4TC on a 1D Mark II. The results werent too bad. Even on the 1D I had to tape the pins on the converter to get AF (f9.0).

I'm lucky that in Oman light isnt an issue.

I'm not sure of the quality of the results you'd get with a 2x TC but as you say you'd need really good light or have the ISO bumped up very high (which again may degrade image quality).

Have you tried the lens with a 1.4TC ? I'd be inclined to try that combo first

Hi Alex. I use a 2x Kenko MC7 ("non-reporting") TC on my 1D and 150-500 OS (occasionally). The results are, or course, limited to good lighting and frame filling. That said, if you can fill the frame in decent light, the results aren't bad. Certainly far better than cropping with such a lens, IMO. Just don't expect miracles. If you continue to push your field prowess, you can get some halfway decent shots.

I think the most obvious limitation is contrast, as the blacks definitely suffer (see attached images).

For what it's worth, my 1D will AF in AI Servo with this combo, despite acting as an ƒ13 lens...no pin taping required.

The sharpness is surprisingly good, but your are right, the contrast is suffering.

Thanks, Thomas. The combo is fun to use, for sure. Having a hand-holdable 1000mm lens with OS is remarkable when the conditions allow. I should add that all of those images are stopped down to ƒ8 at the lens, except the dove which is wide open at ƒ6.3. And all of the images are 500mm except the male House Finch at 403mm.

Alex, I checked out your website. You have some very nice work, age notwithstanding.
