It's from the old "E" series I think.

I am getting a 8X30E repaired, never knew that they made a 12X40, wonder if it is good for stargazing.

Probably sub-10 mm eye relief judging by the size of those eye lenses.

Yes, just a bit more ER and it would be a suitable stargazing glass, a pity.

Close to that if the 10.8mm spec I see in a 1986 Nikon brochure is correct.

Nope, but I doubt there would be any surprises.

I was surprised to see that the eye relief spec was shorter than the 10x35 E (12.4mm). I had always assumed the two models used the same eyepiece, with 12x resulting from the 40mm objective's focal length being 20% longer than the 35mm objective (just like the 8x30 and 10x35 E II now). Maybe the spec is wrong.
