I have added a photoshop tutorial for adding canvas at the side of a frame when your subject is a little bit crammed in.

Its quick, easy and seamless once you've had a little practice.

A way of increasing canvas size by eye rather than guessing pixel dimensions is to use the crop tool.

Highlight the whole image using the crop tool, then drag the handles out of the picture into the surrounding grey area, (the window has to be larger than the image to do this). You can then judge the proportion by eye, when it is right double click inside the box to commit the changes.

You can use the technique outlined above to fill in the blank or I prefer the clone stamp.
